In 1968 as Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, NYC marked its 100th birthday, it set out to celebrate its history and the rich tradition of music in the Lutheran Church, drawing from the high level of music performance in NYC. "Evenings with Johann S" was established based on the German service of Vespers for which the great Lutheran composer Johann Sebastian Bach prepared and rendered so many of his cantatas. It was the first series of its kind in the western hemisphere.
Today, 41 seasons later, Bach Vespers continues to present Bach’s cantatas and other great works in worship! Our Bach Choir, Soloists and Bach Players (on Baroque period instruments) are composed of professional musicians from the New York region and are directed by Cantor Rick Erickson. Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity has been named "A Cultural Landmark" by the New York Landmarks Conservancy.
Chronology of Bach Vespers' Directors:
- John Weaver 1968-70
- Frederick Grimes 1970-92
- Rick Erickson 1992-present.
