Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme
Awake! call to us the voices
der Wächter sehr hoch auf der Zinne:
of the watchmen very high up
on the ramparts:
wach auf du Stadt Jerusalem!
wake up you city Jerusalem!
Mitternacht heißt diese Stunde;
Midnight is named this hour;
sie rufen uns mit hellem Munde:
they call to us with clear voices:
wo seid ihr klugen Jungfrauen?
where are you wise virgins?
Wohl auf, der Bräutgam kömmt,
Get up, the bridegroom is coming,
steht auf, die Lampen nehmt. Alleluja!
arise, take up your lamps. Alleluia!
Macht euch bereit zu der Hochzeit,
Prepare yourselves for the wedding,
ihr müßet ihm entgegen gehn!
you must go to him as he approaches!

Er kommt, er kommt, der Bräutgam kommt!
He comes, he comes, the bridegroom comes!

Der Bräutgam kommt, der einem Rehe
The bridegroom comes, he, like a deer
und jungen Hirsche gleich auf denen Hügeln springt
or a young stag, leaps upon the hills,
und euch das Mahl der Hochzeit bringt.
and brings you the feast for the wedding.
Wacht auf, ermuntert euch!
Wake up, arouse yourselves!

Zion hört die Wächter singen,
Zion hears the watchmen singing,
das Herz tut ihr vor Freuden springen,
her heart in her for joy is leaping,
sie wächet und steht eilend auf.
she wakes and hurriedly arises.
Ihr Freund kommt vom Himmel prächtig,
Her lover comes from heaven in splendor,
von Gnaden stark, von Wahrheit mächtig,
strong in grace, mighty in truth,
ihr Licht wird hell, ihr Stern geht auf.

Ich habe mich mit dir in Ewigkeit vertraut.
I have betrothed myself to you
for eternity.
Dich will ich auf mein Herz,
auf meinen Arm gleich wie ein Siegel setzen,
I want to engrave you in my heart,
the same upon my arm, like a seal,
und dein betrübtes Aug' ergötzen.
and delight your sorrowed eye.
Vergiß, o Seele, nun die Angst,
Forget now fear, O soul,
den Schmerz, den du erdulden müßen;
the pain, which you had to endure;
auf meiner Linken sollst du ruh’n,

Of twelve pearls are the portals
an deiner Stadt; wir sind Konsorten
to your city; we are consorts

Kein Aug' hat je gespürt,
No eye has ever perceived,
kein Ohr hat je gehört
