Wir müssen durch viel Trübsal
      We must traverse great tribulation
 in das Reich Gottes eingehen.
       to enter the Kingdom of God.

3. ARIA ALTO
Ich will nach dem Himmel zu,
      I want to go to Heaven,
schnödes Sodom, ich und du
sind nunmehr geschieden.
      vile Sodom, you and I
      are parted evermore.
Meines Bleibens ist nicht hier,
      My abode is not here,
denn ich lebe doch bei dir
nimmermehr in Frieden.
      for I can live no more with you in peace .
 
4. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Ach! wer doch schon im Himmel wär!
      Oh! would that I was already in Heaven!
wie dränget mich nicht die böse Welt!
      where the evil world pressed upon me no more!
Mit Weinen steh ich auf,
      In weeping I arise,
mit Weinen leg ich mich zu Bette,
      in weeping I lay me down to bed,
wie trüglich wird mir nachgestellt!
      how treacherously I am stalked!
Herr! merke, schaue drauf,
      Lord, take notice, look on me,
sie hassen mich, und ohne Schuld,
      they hate me, and without due,
als wenn die Welt die Macht, mich gar zu töten hätte;
      as though the world had complete power to kill me ;
und leb ich denn mit Seufzen und Geduld
      and so I live in sighing and forbearance
verlassen und veracht',
      foresaken and despised,
so hat sie noch an meinem Leide die größte Freude.
      while it (the world) takes great joy in my suffering still.
Mein Gott, das fällt mir schwer.
      My God, this weighs heavily on me.
Ach! wenn ich doch, mein Jesu, 
heute noch bei dir im Himmel wär! 
      Oh! if only I were, my Jesus,
      even today with you in Heaven!

Ich säe meine Zähren
      I sow my tears
mit bangem Herzen aus.
      with trembling heart.
Jedoch mein Herzeleid
      Yet, my heartache
wird mir die Herrlichkeit
am Tage der seligen Ernte gebären.
     will bear me splendor
     on the day of the blessed harvest.
 
6. RECITATIVO TENORE
Ich bin bereit,
      I am ready
mein Kreuz geduldig zu ertragen;
      to patiently carry my cross;
ich weiß, daß alle meine Plagen
      I know that all my afflictions
nicht wert der Herrlichkeit,
      do not equal the splendor
die Gott an den erwählten Scharen und auch an mir wird offenbaren.
      which God will reveal to the chosen throng and also to me.
Itzt wein ich, da das Weltgetümmel
bei meinem Jammer fröhlich scheint.
      Now I weep, for the world’s tumult
      seems glad for my ruefulness.
Bald kommt die Zeit,
      Soon the time is coming,
da sich mein Herz erfreut,
      wherein my heart rejoices,
und da die Welt einst ohne Tröster weint.
      and where the world once wept without a comforter.
Wer mit dem Feinde ringt und schlägt,
      Whoever wrestles and battles with the foe
dem wird die Krone beigelegt; 
     to them the crown will be attributed;
denn Gott trägt keinen nicht mit Händen in den Himmel.
      for God bears no one by hand up to Heaven.
 
7. ARIA (DUETTO) TENORE BASSO
Wie will ich mich freuen, wie will ich mich laben,
      How I will rejoice, how I will be refreshed,
wenn alle vergängliche Trübsal vorbei!
      when all transitory tribulation is past!
Da glänz ich wie Sterne und leuchte wie Sonne,
      There I will glisten like the stars and shine like the sun,
da störet die himmlische selige Wonne
kein Trauern, Heulen und Geschrei.
      there heaven’s blessed delight is disrupted
      by no grief, howling or lament.
 
8. CORALE
Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele,
      Rejoice greatly, O my soul
und vergiß all Not und Qual,
      and forget all agony and distress,
weil dich nun Christus, dein Herre,
ruft aus diesem Jammertal.
      for now Christ, your Lord,
      calls you out of this vale of tears.
Aus Trübsal und großem Leid
      Out of tribulation and great pain
sollst du fahren in die Freud,
      you shall journey into that joy
die kein Ohre hat gehöret 
      which no ear has ever heard
und in Ewigkeit auch währet.
      but also lasts in eternity.

TEXT: librettist unknown.  Mvmt 2. is based on Acts 14:22;
Mvmt 8. is the chorale tune Werde munter, but as no chorale text was found with the original, here is utilized stanza 1 of Christoph Demantius, Freu dich sehr (1620) as suggested in the Neue Bach Ausgabe.
