Tritt auf die Glaubensbahn,
      Step upon the path of faith,
Gott hat den Stein geleget,
      God has laid the stone
Der Zion hält und träget,
      that supports and carries Zion,
Mensch, stoße dich nicht dran!
      Humanity, do not stumble over it!
Tritt auf die Glaubensbahn!
      Step upon the path of faith!
 
3.  RECITATIVO BASSO
Der Heiland ist gesetzt in Israel
zum Fall und Auferstehen.
      The Savior is set for the fall
      and rising again [of many] in Israel.
Der edle Stein ist sonder Schuld,
      The precious stone is without fault,
wenn sich die böse Welt so hart an ihm verletzt,
      even if the evil world is so sorely bruised by it,
ja, über ihn zur Höllen fällt,
       indeed, even plunging into hell because of it,
weil sie boshaftig an ihn rennet
      for it (the world) viciously rushes upon it
und Gottes Huld und Gnade nicht erkennet!
      and does not recognize God’s grace and mercy!
Doch selig ist ein auserwählter Christ,
      Yet, blessed is the Christian chosen
der seinen Glaubensgrund auf diesen Eckstein leget,
      who lays his own foundation of belief on this cornerstone,
weil er dadurch Heil und Erlösung findet.
      for he will thereby find salvation and redemption.

Stein, der über alle Schätze,
      Stone, surpassing all treasures,
hilf, daß ich zu aller Zeit
      help me, that I, at all times
durch den Glauben auf dich setze
      through faith, set upon you
meinen Grund der Seligkeit
      my foundation for salvation
und mich nicht an dir verletze,
      and that I not be bruised by you,
Stein, der über alle Schätze!
      Stone, above all treasures!

Es ärgre sich die kluge Welt,
      The shrewd world is offended
daß Gottes Sohn verläßt den hohen Ehrenthron,
      that God’s Son would leave the high throne of honor,
daß er in Fleisch und Blut sich kleidet
      that he would clothe himself in flesh and blood
und in der Menschheit leidet.
      and suffer as a human.
Die größte Weisheit dieser Erden
      The greatest wisdom of this earth
muß vor des Höchsten Rat zur größten Torheit werden.
      becomes the greatest folly, before the counsel of the Most-High.
Was Gott beschlossen hat,
      What God has resolved,
kann die Vernunft doch nicht ergründen;
      reason indeed cannot fathom;
die blinde Leiterin verführt die geistlich Blinden.
      the blind director misleads the spiritually blind.

S:  Wie soll ich dich, Liebster der Seelen, umfassen?
            How shall I embrace you, dearest of the soul?
B:  Du mußt dich verleugnen und alles verlassen!
            You must deny yourself and relinquish all!
S:  Wie soll ich erkennen das ewige Licht?
            How shall I perceive the eternal light?
B:  Erkenne mich gläubig und ärgre dich nicht!
            Perceive me in faith and take no offence!
S:  Komm, lehre mich, Heiland, die Erde verschmähen!
            Come, teach me Savior, to disdain the earth!
B:  Komm, Seele, durch Leiden zur Freude zu gehen!
            Come soul, to pass through suffering unto joy!
S:  Ach, ziehe mich, Liebster, so folg ich dir nach!
            Oh, draw me, dearest, that I may follow you!
B:  Dir schenk ich die Krone nach Trübsal und Schmach.
            I bestow on you the crown, after tribulation and disgrace.
