Leichtgesinnte Flattergeister
Simpleminded idle souls
rauben sich des Wortes Kraft.
rob the Word of its might.
Belial mit seinen Kindern
Belial (Satan) and his kindred,
suchet ohnedem zu hindern,
all the more, seek to hinder,
daß es keinen Nutzen schafft.
that it (the Word) gains no advantage.
2. RECITATIVO ALTO
O unglückselger Stand verkehrter Seelen,
O, unrapturous ranks of perverted souls,
so gleichsam an dem Wege sind;
all together upon the path;
und wer will doch des Satans List erzählen,
and yet who will discern the cunning of Satan,
wenn er das Wort dem Herzen raubt,
when he robs the Word from the heart,
das, am Verstande blind,
which, blind of reason,
den Schaden nicht versteht noch glaubt.
neither understands nor believes its detriment.
Es werden Felsenherzen,
They become hearts of stone
so boshaft widerstehn,
so cruelly resisting,
ihr eigen Heil verscherzen
forfeiting their only salvation
und einst zugrunde gehn.
and perishing away, once again.
Es wirkt ja Christi letztes Wort,
Indeed, Christ’s last words caused
daß Felsen selbst zerspringen;
the stones themselves to split;
des Engels Hand bewegt des Grabes Stein,
the hand of the angel moved the stone from the tomb,
ja, Mosis Stab kann dort
aus einem Berge Wasser bringen.
indeed, Moses’ staff could bring
forth water from a mountain.
Willst du, o Herz, noch härter sein?
Can you, O heart, be any harder?
3. ARIA TENORE
Der schädlichen Dornen unendliche Zahl,
The unending number of treacherous thorns,
die Sorgen der Wollust, die Schätze zu mehren,
the endeavors of lust to increase its treasures,
die werden das Feuer der höllischen Qual
in Ewigkeit nähren.
these will fuel the fire of hell’s torture
in eternity.
4. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Von diesen wird die Kraft erstickt,
From them the power will be snuffed out,
der edle Same liegt vergebens,
the noble seed is sown in vane,
wer sich nicht recht im Geiste schickt,
whoever does not rightly engage the Spirit
sein Herz beizeiten
zum guten Lande zu bereiten,
preparing his heart in a timely way for the good ground,
daß unser Herz die Süßigkeiten schmecket,
where our hearts might taste the sweetness,
so uns dies Wort entdecket,
thus this word detects for us,
die Kräfte dieses und des künftgen Lebens.
this power and its life thereafter.
5. CORO
Laß, Höchster, uns zu allen Zeiten
Leave for us, Most-high, at all times
des Herzens Trost, dein heilig Wort.
comfort of the heart, your holy Word.
Du kannst nach deiner Allmachtshand
allein ein fruchtbar gutes Land
in unsern Herzen zubereiten.
You alone, by your mighty hand,
can nurture in our hearts a fruitful, good land.
