Sie werden aus Saba alle kommen,
They will all come out of Sheba,
Gold und Weihrauch bringen
bearing gold and frankincense
und des Herren Lob verkündigen.
and declare the praise of the Lord.
2. CORALE
Die Kön'ge aus Saba kamen dar,
The Kings came forth from Sheba ,
Gold, Weihrauch, Myrrhen brachten sie dar,
bearing gold, frankincense, and myrrh,

3. RECITATIVO BASSO
Was dort Jesaias vorhergesehn,
What once Isaiah had foreseen
das ist zu Bethlehem geschehn.

Hier stellen sich die Weisen bei Jesu Krippe ein
The Wisemen appear before Jesus’ manger
und wollen ihn als ihren König preisen.

Gold, Weihrauch, Myrrhen sind die köstlichen Geschenke,
Gold, frankincense and myrrh are the precious gifts,
womit sie dieses Jesuskind zu Bethlehem im Stall beehren.
with which they honor this Child Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem.
Mein Jesu, wenn ich itzt an meine Pflicht gedenke,
My Jesus, when I ponder now my tasks,
muß ich mich auch zu deiner Krippe kehren
I must also turn to your manger
und gleichfalls dankbar sein:
and likewise give thanks:
denn dieser Tag ist mir ein Tag der Freuden,
for this day is a day of joy for me,
da du, o Lebensfürst, das Licht der Heiden und ihr Erlöser wirst
where you, O Prince of Life, become the light of the nations and their redeemer.
Was aber bring ich wohl, du Himmelskönig?
But truely, what can I bring, you King of Heaven?
Ist dir mein Herze nicht zuwenig,
Is my heart not insufficient to you,
so nimm es gnädig an,
yet mercifully do accept it
weil ich nichts Edlers bringen kann.
for I have nothing nobler I can bring.

Gold aus Ophir ist zu schlecht,
Gold from Ophir is too inferior,
weg, nur weg mit eitlen Gaben,
be gone, away with idle gifts
die ihr aus der Erde brecht!

Jesus will das Herze haben.
Jesus wants to have the heart.
Schenke dies, o Christenschar,
Bestow this, O Christian flock,
Jesu zu dem neuen Jahr!

Verschmähe nicht,
du, meiner Seele Licht,

mein Herz, das ich in Demut zu dir bringe;

es schließt ja solche Dinge in sich zugleich mit ein,

Des Glaubens Gold, der Weihrauch des Gebets,
