Ich hab’ in Gottes Herz und Sinn
Unto God’s heart and mind I have
mein Herz und Sinn ergeben,
surrendered my heart and mind,
was böse scheint, ist mein Gewinn,
that which seems dire is my gain,
der Tod selbst ist mein Leben.
death itself is my life.
Ich bin ein Sohn des, der den Thron
des Himmels aufgezogen;
I am a son of him who raised up
the throne of heaven;
ob er gleich schlägt und Kreuz auflegt,
though he might smite and issue the cross,
bleibt doch sein Herz gewogen.

Es kann mir fehlen nimmermehr!
Nothing can fail me anymore!
Es müssen eh'r wie selbst
der treue Zeuge spricht,
Sooner would,
as the faithful witness reveals,
mit Prasseln und mit grausem Knallen

die Berge und die Hügel fallen:

mein Heiland aber trüget nicht,

Wenn er mich auch gleich wirft ins Meer,
If he suddenly casts me into the sea,
so lebt der Herr auf großen Wassern noch,
the Lord abides even on the expanse of the waters,
der hat mir selbst mein Leben zugeteilt,
he himself has apportioned my life,
drum werden sie mich nicht ersäufen.

Wenn mich die Wellen schon ergreifen,
When the waves have just seized me
und ihre Wut mit mir zum Abgrund eilt,
and their fury rushes me to the abyss,
so will er mich nur üben,
he merely wants thus to test me,
ob ich an Jonas werde denken,
whether I will be mindful of Jonah,
ob ich den Sinn mit Petrus auf ihn werde lenken.
whether I, like Peter, will direct my thoughts to him.
Er will mich stark im Glauben machen,
He wants to make me strong in faith,
er will vor meine Seele wachen,
and watch over my soul,
und mein Gemüt,
and my spirit,
das immer wankt und weicht
that continually falters and wavers
in seiner Güt’,
within his goodness,
der an Beständigkeit nichts gleicht,
which nothing can equal in endurance,
gewöhnen, fest zu stehen.

Mein Fuß soll fest, bis an der Tage letzten Rest
sich hier auf diesen Felsen gründen.
My foot shall be firmly grounded upon this rock
until the day of final rest.
Halt ich den Stand,
I keep this foothold,
und lasse mich in felsenfesten Glauben finden,
and let myself be founded in rock-solid faith,
weiß seine Hand,
knowing his hand,
die er mich schon vom Himmel beut,
which he already extends to me from heaven,
zu rechter Zeit
at the proper time
mich wieder zu erhöhen.

Seht, seht! wie reißt, wie bricht, wie fällt,
Behold, behold! how ruptures,
how breaks, how falls,
was Gottes starker Arm nicht hält.
whatever God’s mighty arm does not hold.
Seht aber fest und unbeweglich prangen,
But behold how stout and steadfastly shines,
was unser Held mit seiner Macht umfangen.
whatever our champion clasps with his might.
Laßt Satan wüten, rasen, krachen,
Let Satan rave, rage, roar,
der starke Gott wird uns unüberwindlich machen.
powerful God will make us invincible.
4. CORALE ALTO
Zudem ist Weisheit und Verstand
bei ihm ohn alle Maßen,
Furthermore, wisdom and understanding
are in him without any measure,
Zeit, Ort und Stund ist ihm bekannt,
he recognizes the time, place and hour
zu tun und auch zu lassen.

Er weiß, wenn Freud’, er weiß, wenn Leid
He knows when joy, he knows when pain

Wir wollen nun nicht länger zagen
und uns mit Fleisch und Blut,

weil wir in Gottes Hut,
so furchtsam wie bisher befragen.
for we, though in God’s care,
have up to now so timidly doubted.
Ich denke dran, wie Jesus nicht gefürcht’
das tausendfache Leiden;
I ponder upon how Jesus did not fear
the thousand-fold suffering;
er sah es an als eine Quelle ew’ger Freuden.

of everlasting joy.
Und dir, mein Christ,
And to you, my Christian,
wird deine Angst und Qual,
your fear and torment,
dein bitter Kreuz und Pein
your bitter cross and pain
um Jesu willen Heil und Zucker sein.

salvation and sweetness.
Vertraue Gottes Huld
Trust God’s grace
und merke noch, was nötig ist:
and mark well what is needful:
Geduld! Geduld!
Patience! Patience!
6. ARIA BASSO
Das Brausen von den rauhen Winden
The showers from the raw winds
macht, daß wir volle Ähren finden.
make it possible for us to reap full harvest.
Des Kreuzes Ungestüm
schafft bei den Christen Frucht,
The vehemence of the cross
yields fruit for the Christian,
drum laßt uns alle unser Leben
dem weisen Herrscher ganz ergeben.
therefore let us all surrender our lives
to the wise ruler completely.
Küßt seines Sohnes Hand,
Kiss his son‘s hand,
verehrt die treue Zucht.
revere the loyal stock.

Ei nun, mein Gott, so fall ich dir
getrost in deine Hände.
Ah now, my God, thus I confidently fall
into your hands.
So spricht der gottgelaß’ne Geist,
Thus speaks the God-fearing soul,
wenn er des Heilands Brudersinn
und Gottes Treue gläubig preist.
when it devoutly extols the fraternity of the Savior
and God’s faithfulness.
Nimm mich und mache es mit mir
take me and deal with me
bis an mein letztes Ende.

Ich weiß gewiß, daß ich unfehlbar selig bin,
I know with certainty that I am infallibly blessed
wenn meine Not und mein Bekümmernis
as my distress and my troubles
von dir so wird geendigt werden:

Wie du wohl weißt, daß meinem Geist
dadurch sein Nutz entstehe,

Meinem Hirten bleib’ ich treu.
To my shepherd I remain true.
Will er mir den Kreuzkelch füllen,
If he wants to fill the cross‘ chalice for me,
ruh’ ich ganz in seinem Willen,
I rest completely in his will,
er steht mir im Leiden bei.
he stands beside me in suffering.
Es wird dennoch, nach dem Weinen,
Evenso, it shall be,
following the weeping,
Jesu Sonne wieder scheinen.
that Jesus’ sun shines once again.
Meinem Hirten bleib’ ich treu.
To my shepherd I remain true.
Jesu leb’ ich, der wird walten,
I live in Jesus, who will prevail,
freu’ dich, Herz, du sollst erkalten,
be glad heart, you shall grow cold,
Jesus hat genug getan.
Jesus has done sufficient.
Amen: Vater, nimm mich an!
Amen: Father, take me in!
9. CORALE
Soll ich denn auch des Todes Weg
und finstre Straße reisen,
I too then shall sojourn upon the path of death
and the gloomy road,
wohlan! ich tret’ auf Bahn und Steg’,
onward! I step over trail and foot-bridge
den mir dein’ Augen weisen.
wherever your eye directs me.
Du bist mein Hirt, der Alles wird
zu solchem Ende kehren,
You are my shepherd, who will bring all to such an end,
daß ich einmal in deinem Saal
that once I am within your halls
dich ewig möge ehren!
I might glorify you eternally!
