Was frag ich nach der Welt
What need I ask of the world
und allen ihren Schätzen
and all its treasures
wenn ich mich nur an dir,
mein Jesu, kann ergötzen!
when I can simply regale myself
in you, my Jesus?
Dich hab ich einzig mir
zur Wollust fürgestellt,
I have you intended
solely for my pleasure,
du, du bist meine Ruh:
you, you are my tranquility:
was frag ich nach der Welt!

2. ARIA BASSO
Die Welt ist wie ein Rauch und Schatten
The world is like a fume or shadow
der bald verschwindet und vergeht,
which quickly vanishes and recedes,
weil sie nur kurze Zeit besteht.
for it only exists a short while.
Wenn aber alles fällt und bricht,
However, when all else falls and collapses
bleibt Jesus meine Zuversicht,
Jesus remains my confidence,
an dem sich meine Seele hält.

Die Welt sucht Ehr und Ruhm
The world seeks glory and fame
bei hocherhabnen Leuten.
among affluent people.
Ein Stolzer baut die prächtigsten Paläste,
A haughty man builds splendid palaces,
er sucht das höchste Ehrenamt,
he seeks the highest post of honor,
er kleidet sich aufs beste,
he clothes himself in finery,
in Purpur, Gold, in Silber, Seid und Samt.
in purple, gold, in silver, silk and velvet.
Sein Name soll für allen
in jedem Teil der Welt erschallen.
His name should echo in every part of the world to all.
Sein Hochmuts-turm
His pretentious tower
soll durch die Luft bis an die Wolken dringen,
should penetrate the air up to the clouds,
er trachtet nur nach hohen Dingen
he strives only for lofty things
und denkt nicht einmal dran,
and thinks not once upon
wie bald doch diese gleiten.

Oft bläset eine schale Luft
Often does a stale wind blow
den stolzen Leib auf einmal in die Gruft,

Acht! solcher eitler Tand
Oh! such vain trifles

Dies aber, was mein Herz
vor anderm rühmlich hält,

holds in esteem above all else,
was Christen wahren Ruhm und rechte Ehre gibet,
to which Christians give true glory and right honor
und was mein Geist, der sich der Eitelkeit entreißt,
and that which my spirit, which wrests itself free from conceit,
anstatt der Pracht und Hoffart liebet,
loves, rather than splendor and pomp,
ist Jesus nur allein,
is simply Jesus alone,
und dieser solls auch ewig sein.
and this also shall it be in eternity.
Gesetzt, daß mich die Welt
darum vor töricht hält:
Granted, that the world
takes me for a fool:

Betörte Welt, betörte Welt!
Deluded world, deluded world!
Auch dein Reichtum, Gut und Geld
Even your fortunes, goods and money
ist Betrug und falscher Schein.
are deceit and counterfeit.
Du magst den eitlen Mammon zählen,
You may count your vain mammon,
ich will davor mir Jesum wählen;
I will sooner choose Jesus for myself;
Jesus, Jesus soll allein
Jesus, Jesus alone shall
meiner Seele Reichtum sein.
be the fortune of my soul.

5. CORALE E RECITATIVO BASSO
Die Welt bekümmert sich.
The world fusses over itself.
Was muß doch wohl der Kummer sein?
And what indeed is there to fuss about?
O Torheit! dieses macht ihr Pein:
O folly! this is its shame:
im Fall sie wird verachtet.
at its fall it shall be disdained.
Welt, schäme dich!
World, shame on you!
Gott hat dich ja so sehr geliebet,
God loved you indeed so much
daß er sein eingebornes Kind vor deine Sünd
zur größten Schmach um dein Ehre gibet,
that he gave his only begotten child for your sins,
in utmost disgrace, for the sake of your honor,
und du willst nicht um Jesu willen leiden?
and you will not suffer for Jesus sake?
Die Traurigkeit der Welt ist niemals größer,
The wretchedness of the world is never greater
als wenn man ihr mit List
nach ihren Ehren trachtet.
than when one deviously
strives to gain its glory.
Es ist ja besser,
It is indeed better
ich trage Christi Schmach,
that I bear the disgrace Christ did
solang es ihm gefällt.
as long as he so desires.
Es ist ja nur ein Leiden dieser Zeit.
It is, yes, merely suffering for this time.
Ich weiß gewiß, daß mich die Ewigkeit
dafür mit Preis und Ehren krönet.
I know with certainty that eternity
will thereafter crown me with praise and honor.
Ob mich die Welt verspottet und verhöhnet,
Although the world derides and ridicules me,
ob sie mich gleich verächtlich hält,
although it suddenly holds me with contempt,
wenn mich mein Jesus ehrt:
if my Jesus reveres me,

6. ARIA TENORE
Die Welt kann ihre Lust und Freud,
das Blendwerk schnöder Eitelkeit,
nicht hoch genug erhöhen.
The world cannot exalt its lust and delight highly enough,
the delusion of vile conceit.
Sie wühlt, nur gelben Kot zu finden,
gleich einem Maulwurf in den Gründen
It burrows in the ground like a mole after yellow dung,
und lässt dafür den Himmel stehen.
thereby abandoning heaven.
7. ARIA SOPRANO
Er halt es mit der blinden Welt,
He shall end with the blind world,
wer nichts auf seine Seele hält,
whoever does not care for his soul,
mir ekelt vor der Erden.
the earth nauseates me.
Ich will nur meinen Jesum lieben
I just want to love my Jesus
und mich in Buß und Glauben üben,
and practice penance and faith,
so kann ich reich und selig werden.
thus I can become rich and blessed.
8. CORALE
Was frag ich nach der Welt!
What need I ask of the world?
Im Hui muß sie verschwinden,
In a twinkling it must vanish,
ihr Ansehn kann durchaus
den blassen Tod nicht binden.
its prestige can certainly not
constrain pallid death.
Die Güter müssen fort,
Belongings must depart,
und alle Lust verfällt;
and all desires decay;
bleibt Jesus nur bei mir:
if only Jesus remains by me,:
was frag ich nach der Welt!

Mein Jesus ist mein Leben,
My Jesus is my life,
mein Schatz, mein Eigentum,
my treasure, my possession,
dem ich mich ganz ergeben,
I yield to him completely,
mein ganzes Himmelreich,
my entire Kingdom of Heaven
und was mir sonst gefällt.
and whatever else I desire.
