Text for BWV 22
Jesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. ARIOSO TENORE E BASSO E CORO
T

Jesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe und sprach:
          Jesus gathered the twelve and said:
B  „
Sehet, wir geh'n hinauf gen Jerusalem,
         "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem,

und es wird Alles vollendet werden,
         and everything will be fulfilled

das geschrieben ist von des Menschen Sohn."
         that has been written of the Son of Man."
Choir

Sie aber vernahmen der keines
         They, however, perceived nothing

und wußten nicht was das gesaget war.
         and did not comprehend what was being said.

2. ARIA ALTO
Mein Jesu, ziehe mich nach dir,
     My Jesus, draw me with you,
ich bin bereit, ich will von hier
      I am ready, I want to leave here
und nach Jerusalem zu deinen Leiden geh'n,
     and proceed to Jerusalem unto your passion.
Wohl mir, wenn ich die Wichtigkeit
von dieser Leid- und Sterbenszeit
zu meinem Troste kann durchgehends wohl versteh'n.
     Blessed am I, if I can well comprehend
     the importance of this time of suffering and death
     continually, for my consolation.

3. RECITATIVO BASSO
Mein Jesu, ziehe mich, so werd' ich laufen;
     My Jesus, draw me, then I will run;
denn Fleisch und Blut verstehet ganz und gar,
     for flesh and blood cannot fully comprehend,
nebst deinen Jüngern nicht,
     even as your disciples did not,
was das gesaget war.
     what was being said.
Es sehnt sich nach der Welt
     They pine after the world
und nach dem größten Haufen;
     and its vast accumulations;
sie wollen beiderseits,
wenn du verkläret bist,
     when you were transfigured
     they even wanted, on either side
zwar eine feste Burg
auf Tabors Berge bauen;
     of Mount Tabor
     to build a secure lodge;
hingegen Golgatha,
so voller Leiden ist,
     in contrast to Golgotha,
     so replete with sorrows,
in deiner Niedrigkeit
mit keinem Auge schauen.
     where no eye would look
     upon your humiliation.
Ach! kreuzige bei mir,
in der verderbten Brust,
     Oh! crucify within me,
     in my corrupt breast,
zuvörderst diese Welt
und die verbot’ne Lust;
     first and foremost this world
     and forbidden desires,
so werd' ich, was du sagst,
vollkommen wohl verstehen
     so I will well comprehend
     what you say completely
und nach Jerusalem
mit tausend Freuden gehen.
     and proceed to Jerusalem
     with thousand-fold joy.

4. ARIA TENORE
Mein alles in allem, mein ewiges Gut,
     My all in all, my eternal good,
verbess’re das Herze, verändre den Mut;
     improve the heart, modify courage;
schlag' alles darnieder, was dieser Entsagung
des Fleisches zuwider, mein ewiges Gut!
     strike down anything contrary to this
     denial of the flesh, my eternal good!
Doch wenn ich nun geistlich ertötet da bin,
     Indeed, as I now am spiritually dead here,
so ziehe mich nach dir in Friede dahin.
     so draw me to you there in peace.

5. CORALE
Ertöt' uns durch dein' Güte,
     Slay us by your goodness,
erweck' uns durch dein' Gnad',
     awaken us through your grace,
den alten Menschen kränke,
     wound ancient humanity
daß der neu' leben mag
     that it may live anew
wohl hie auf dieser Erden,
     well, here upon this earth,
den Sinn und all' Begehren
und G'danken hab’n zu dir.
     having purpose and all desires
     and thoughts be unto you.
