Text for CANTATA 77
Du sollt Gott, deinen Herren, lieben
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Du sollt Gott, deinen Herren, lieben
You shall love God, your Lord,
von ganzem Herzen, von ganzer Seele,
with whole heart, with complete soul,
von allen Kräften und von ganzem Gemüte
with all your might and with entire mind
und deinen Nächsten als dich selbst.
     and your neighbor as yourself.

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
So muß es sein!
     So it must be!
Gott will das Herz vor sich alleine haben.
God will have the heart for himself alone.
Man muß den Herrn von ganzer Seelen
zu seiner Lust erwählen
     One must choose the Lord
with complete soul, out of desire,
und sich nicht mehr erfreun,
     and no longer take delight
als wenn er das Gemüte
durch seinen Geist entzündt,
except in that which ignites the mind
     through his Spirit,
weil wir nur seiner Huld und Güte
alsdenn erst recht versichert sind.
for only by his grace and goodness
do we ever truly have assurance.

3. ARIA SOPRANO
Mein Gott, ich liebe dich von Herzen,
My God, I love you from the heart,
mein ganzes Leben hangt dir an.
my whole life adheres to you.
Laß mich doch dein Gebot erkennen
Let me but follow your commandments
und in Liebe so entbrennen,
and be so aflamed in love
daß ich dich ewig lieben kann.
that I might love you eternally.

4. RECITATIVO TENORE
Gib mir dabei, mein Gott!
ein Samariterherz,
     Grant me thereby, my God!
     the heart of a Samaritan,
daß ich zugleich den Nächsten liebe
that I likewise love my neighbor
und mich bei seinem Schmerz
auch über ihn betrübe,
and that I also grieve for him
     in his pain,
damit ich nicht bei ihm vorübergeh
that I neither pass him by
und ihn in seiner Not nicht lasse.
nor abandon him in his need.
Gib, daß ich Eigenliebe hasse,
     Grant, that I abhor self-love,
so wirst du mir dereinst das Freudenleben
nach meinem Wunsch, jedoch aus Gnaden geben.
thus one day you will bestow on me a life of joy,
which I do wish, yet only out of grace.

5. ARIA ALTO
Ach, es bleibt in meiner Liebe
lauter Unvollkommenheit!
     Alas, vast imperfection resides
     within my love!
Hab ich oftmals gleich den Willen,
was Gott saget, zu erfüllen,
Though I often measure my will
by what God wants me to achieve,
fehlt mir's doch an Möglichkeit.
     I indeed fail in capability.

6. CORALE
Herr, durch den Glauben wohn in mir,
Lord, abide in me though faith,
laß ihn sich immer stärken,
     let it ever strengthen
daß er sei fruchtbar für und für
that it be fruitful forever and ever
und reich in guten Werken;
     and be rich in good works;
daß er sei tätig durch die Lieb,
that it be active in love,
mit Freuden und Geduld sich üb,
     exercising joy and forbearance
dem Nächsten fort zu dienen.
     henceforth to serve my neighbor.
