Text for Cantata 37
Wer da gläubet und getauft wird
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO

Wer da gläubet und getauft wird,
     Whoever so believes and is baptized
der wird selig werden.
     will be blessed.

2. ARIA TENORE
Der Glaube ist das Pfand der Liebe,
     Faith is the return for the love
die Jesus für die Seinen hegt.
     which Jesus fosters for his own.
Drum hat er bloß aus Liebestriebe,
     Thus has he, out of love's passion alone
da er ins Lebensbuch mich schriebe,
     while inscribing me in the book of life,
mir dieses Kleinod beigelegt.
     bestowed on me this gem.

3. CORALE DUETTO SOPRANO ED ALTO
Herr Gott Vater, mein starker Held!
     Lord God Father, my mighty champion!
Du hast mich ewig vor der Welt
in deinem Sohn geliebet.
     You have eternally loved me through your son,
     even before the world began.
Dein Sohn hat mich ihm selbst vertraut,
     Your son has betrothed himself to me,
er ist mein Schatz, ich bin sein Braut,
     he is my treasure, I am his bride,
sehr hoch in ihm erfreuet.
     most highly rejoicing in him.
Eia! Eia!
     Hurrah! Hurrah!
Himmlisch Leben wird er geben mir dort oben;
     He will grant me heavenly life there above;
ewig soll mein Herz ihn loben.
     eternally shall my heart praise him.

4. RECITATIVO BASSO
Ihr Sterblichen, verlanget ihr, mit mir
     You mortals, do you long like me
das Antlitz Gottes anzuschauen?
     to gaze upon the face of God?
So dürft ihr nicht auf gute Werke bauen;
     Then do not build upon good works;
denn ob sich wohl ein Christ
     for even though a Christian rightly
muß in den guten Werken üben,
     must endeavor to do good works
weil es der ernste Wille Gottes ist,
     since it is the most solemn will of God,
so macht der Glaube doch allein,
     still is it only by faith alone
daß wir vor Gott gerecht und selig sein.
     that we are justified and blessed before God.

5. ARIA BASSO
Der Glaube schafft der Seele Flügel,
     Faith fashions wings for the soul
daß sie sich in den Himmel schwingt,
     that it might soar to Heaven,
die Taufe ist das Gnadensiegel,
     baptism is the seal of grace
das uns den Segen Gottes bringt;
     that brings us God’s blessing;
und daher heißt ein selger Christ,
     and hence a Christian is called blessed
wer gläubet und getaufet ist.
     who believes and is baptized.

6. CORALE
Den Glauben mir verleihe
     Instill in me the faith
an dein' Sohn Jesum Christ,
     in your son Jesus Christ,
mein Sünd mir auch verzeihe
     pardon me also of my sins
allhier zu dieser Frist.
     already in this moment.
Du wirst mir nicht versagen,
     You will not deny me
was du verheißen hast,
     what you have promised,
daß er mein Sünd tu tragen
     that he will bear my sin
und lös mich von der Last.
     and relieve me of its burden.
