Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
ERSTER TEIL (Part 1)
1. CORO
Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes,
The heavens declare the glory of God,
und die Feste verkündiget seiner Hände Werk.
and the firmament proclaims the work of his hands.
Es ist keine Sprache noch Rede,
There is no language nor discourse
da man nicht ihre Stimme höre.
for no one can perceive their voice.
2. RECITATIVO TENORE
So läßt sich Gott nicht unbezeuget!
So God does not go unattested!
Natur und Gnade redt alle Menschen an:
Nature and grace address all humanity:
Dies alles hat ja Gott getan,
All this God has done indeed
daß sich die Himmel regen
that the heavens be stirred
und Geist und Körper sich bewegen.
and spirit and body set to motion.
Gott selbst hat sich zu euch geneiget
God has inclined himself to you
und ruft durch Boten ohne Zahl:
and beckons through messengers without number:
Auf, kommt zu meinem Liebesmahl!
Arise, come to my feast of love!
3. ARIA SOPRANO
Hört, ihr Völker, Gottes Stimme,
Hear God’s voice, you people,
eilt zu seinem Gnadenthron!
hasten toward his throne of grace!
Aller Dinge Grund und Ende
Source and ending of all things
ist sein eingeborner Sohn,
is his only begotten son,
daß sich alles zu ihm wende.

Wer aber hört,
But who listens,
da sich der größte Haufen
zu andern Göttern kehrt?
where great hordes
turn to other gods?
Der ältste Götze eigner Lust
The ancient idols of selfish desire
beherrscht der Menschen Brust.
dominate the human breast.
Die Weisen brüten Torheit aus,
The wise breed folly,
und Belial sitzt wohl in Gottes Haus,
and the Devil is even seated
in the house of God,
weil auch die Christen selbst
von Christo laufen.

Fahr hin, abgöttische Zunft!
Be gone, idolatrous clan!
Sollt sich die Welt gleich verkehren,
Though the world remains wayward
will ich doch Christum verehren,
I will still venerate Christ,
er ist das Licht der Vernunft.

Du hast uns, Herr,
von allen Straßen zu dir geruft,
You have beckoned us to you, Lord,
from every approach
als wir im Finsternis der Heiden saßen,
as we sat in the darkness of the heathens,
und, wie das Licht die Luft
belebet und erquickt,
and as the light
invigorated and rejuvinated the air
uns auch erleuchtet und belebet,
we too were enlightened and invigorated,
ja mit dir selbst gespeiset und getränket
yes, even dining and drinking of you,
und deinen Geist geschenket,
and your Spirit was poured out
der stets in unserm Geiste schwebet.

Es woll uns Gott genädig sein
May God be gracious unto us
und seinen Segen geben;
and grant us his blessing;
sein Antlitz uns mit hellem Schein
erleucht zum ewgen Leben,
his countenance shining bright
illumines us toward eternal life
daß wir erkennen seine Werk
that we might discern his works
und was ihm lieb auf Erden,
and what is dear to him upon earth,
und Jesus Christus' Heil und Stärk
and Jesus Christ’s healing and strength
bekannt den Heiden werden
be made known to the heathens
und sie zu Gott bekehren!
and they be converted to God!

Gott segne noch die treue Schar,
God, still bless the faithful band
damit sie seine Ehre durch Glauben, Liebe, Heiligkeit
erweise und vermehre.

It is Heaven upon the earth
und muß durch steten Streit
and must, through constant strife
mit Haß und mit Gefahr
with hatred and with peril,

Hasse nur, hasse mich recht,
Simply hate, truly hate me,
feindlichs Geschlecht!
hostile generation!
Christum gläubig zu umfassen,
To embrace Christ in faith
will ich alle Freude lassen.
I will forgo all pleasantries.
11. RECITATIVO ALTO
Ich fühle schon im Geist,
I already spiritually sense
wie Christus mir
der Liebe Süßigkeit erweist
how Christ manifests in me
the sweetness of love
und mich mit Manna speist,
and nourishes me with manna,
damit sich unter uns allhier
die brüderliche Treue
stets stärke und verneue.
thereby ever strengthening
and renewing fraternal loyalty
among all of us here.
12. ARIA ALTO
Liebt, ihr Christen, in der Tat!
Love, you Christians, in what you do!
Jesus stirbet für die Brüder,
Jesus died for his brethren
und sie sterben für sich wieder,
and they die for each other as well,
weil er sich verbunden hat.
for he has obligated himself.
13. RECITATIVO TENORE
So soll die Christenheit
So shall Christendom
die Liebe Gottes preisen
praise the love of God
und sie an sich erweisen:
and prove it amongst themselves:
bis in die Ewigkeit
until once in eternity
die Himmel frommer Seelen
souls devout to Heaven
Gott und sein Lob erzählen.

Es danke, Gott, und lobe dich
das Volk in guten Taten;
The people thank and praise you God,
by doing good;
das Land bringt Frucht und bessert sich,
the land brings forth fruit and flourishes,
dein Wort ist wohlgeraten.
your word is well advised.
Uns segne Vater und der Sohn,
Bless us Father and the Son,
uns segne Gott, der Heilge Geist,
and bless us God the Holy Spirit,
dem alle Welt die Ehre tu,
whom all the world does honor,
für ihm sich fürchte allermeist
fear him above all things
und sprech von Herzen: Amen!
and speak from the heart: Amen!
