Christus, der ist mein Leben

1. CORO E RECITATIVO TENORE
Christus, der ist mein Leben,
Christ, he is my life,
Sterben ist mein Gewinn;
dying is my gain;
dem tu ich mich ergeben,
I do commit myself to him,
mit Freud fahr ich dahin.
with joy I journey there.
Mit Freuden,
With joy,
ja mit Herzenslust
yes with heart’s desire
will ich von hinnen scheiden.
will I depart from here.
Und hieß es heute noch: Du mußt!
And if the call came yet today: You must!
so bin ich willig und bereit,
so am I willing and prepared,
den armen Leib, die abgezehrten Glieder,
this weak body, the haggard limbs,
das Kleid der Sterblichkeit
the clothing of mortality,
der Erde wieder
in ihren Schoß zu bringen.
to return to the bosom of the earth.
Mein Sterbelied ist schon gemacht;
My death hymn is already composed;
ach, dürft ichs heute singen!
oh may I sing it today!
Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin,
With peace and joy I journey there
nach Gottes Willen,
according to God’s will,
getrost ist mir mein Herz und Sinn,
comforted are my heart and mind,
sanft und stille.
tender and still.
Wie Gott mir verheißen hat:
As God has promised me:

Nun, falsche Welt!

du arge, falsche Welt,

dein stündlich böses Leben
your evil life, hour for hour,
durchaus mir nicht gefällt.

Im Himmel ist gut wohnen,
In Heaven living is good,
hinauf steht mein Begier.

Da wird Gott ewig lohnen

so wohl geschehn,

daß ich den Tod, das Ende aller Not,
in meinen Gliedern könnte sehn;

I would elect this as my annuity

come, bring an end to my suffering,

6. RECITATIVO BASSO
Denn ich weiß dies
For this I know
und glaub es ganz gewiß,
and believe with full certainty
daß ich aus meinem Grabe
ganz einen sichern Zugang zu dem Vater habe.
that out of my grave I have
full, secure access to the Father.
Mein Tod ist nur ein Schlaf,
My death is merely a slumber,
dadurch der Leib,
wherein the body,
der hier von Sorgen abgenommen,
here removed from worries,
zur Ruhe kommen.

Sucht nun ein Hirte sein verlornes Schaf,
Just as a shepherd seeks his lost sheep
wie sollte Jesus mich nicht wieder finden,
how shall Jesus not find me again,
da er mein Haupt und ich sein Gliedmaß bin!

So kann ich nun mit frohen Sinnen
Thus, I can now with gladdened thoughts
mein selig Auferstehn auf meinen Heiland gründen.

Weil du vom Tod erstanden bist,
Since you are raised from death
werd ich im Grab nicht bleiben;

dein letztes Wort mein Auffahrt ist,

Todsfurcht kannst du vertreiben.
you dispel the fear of death.
Denn wo du bist, da komm ich hin,
For where you are, there I am coming,
daß ich stets bei dir leb und bin;
that I might ever live and be with you;
drum fahr ich hin mit Freuden.
