Text for CANTATA 17
Wer Dank opfert, der preiset mich
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

ERSTER TEIL (Part 1)

1. CORO
Wer Dank opfert,
     Whoever offers thanks
der preiset mich,
     he praises me,
und das ist der Weg,
     and this is the way,
daß ich ihm zeige das Heil Gottes.
     that I might reveal
     to him God's salvation.

2. RECITATIVO ALTO
Es muß die ganze Welt
ein stummer Zeuge werden

     The entire world must
     become a silent witness
von Gottes hoher Majestät,
     of God’s lofty majesty,
Luft, Wasser, Firmament und Erden,
     air, water, firmament and earth
wenn ihre Ordnung als in Schnuren geht;
     in their order proceed in alignment;
ihn preiset die Natur
mit ungezählten Gaben,
     nature praises him
     with innumerable gifts
die er ihr in den Schoß gelegt,
which he has laid in her lap,
und was den Odem hegt,
     and whatever cherishes breath
will noch mehr Anteil an ihm haben,
will have even greater portion in him,
wenn es zu seinem Ruhm
so Zung als Fittich regt.

     as tongues so stirred
     take wing for his glory.

3. ARIA SOPRANO
Herr, deine Güte reicht,
     Lord, your goodness spans
so weit der Himmel ist,
     as wide as the sky,
und deine Wahrheit langt,
     and your truth extends
so weit die Wolken gehen.
as far as the clouds proceed.
Wüßt ich gleich sonsten nicht,
     If I knew otherwise nothing
wie herrlich groß du bist,
of how gloriously great you are
so könnt ich es gar leicht
aus deinen Werken sehen.
     still I could quite easily
     decipher it from your works.
Wie sollt man dich mit Dank
davor nicht stetig preisen?
     How should one therefore
     not continually praise you
     with thanks?
Da du uns willt den Weg
des Heils hingegen weisen.
     Hence you will point us
     along the path of salvation.

ZWEITER TEIL (Part 2)

4. RECITATIVO TENORE
Einer aber unter ihnen,
     But one among them,
da er sahe, daß er
gesund worden war,
     when he saw that he
     had been made well,
kehrete um und preisete Gott
mit lauter Stimme
     turned back and praised
     God with a loud voice,
und fiel auf sein Angesicht
zu seinen Füßen

and fell down to his face
     at his feet
und dankte ihm,
     and thanked him,
und das war ein Samariter.
     and this was a Samaritan.

5. ARIA TENORE
Welch Übermaß der Güte
     What abundance of goodness
schenkst du mir!
     you present to me!
Doch was gibt mein Gemüte dir dafür?
     Indeed, what can my soul
     offer you in return?
Herr, ich weiß sonst nichts zu bringen,
Lord, I know nothing else to bring
als dir Dank und Lob zu singen.
     but to sing you
     thanks and praise.

6. RECITATIVO BASSO
Sieh meinen Willen an,
     Examine my will,
ich kenne, was ich bin:
     I acknowledge what I am:
Leib, Leben und Verstand,
     body, life and reason,
Gesundheit, Kraft und Sinn,
     health, strength and thought,
der du mich lässt
mit frohem Mund genießen,

     which you let me relish
     with glad voice,
sind Ströme deiner Gnad,
[these] are streams of your grace
die du auf mich lässt fließen.
which you let flow over me.
Lieb, Fried, Gerechtigkeit
     Love, peace, righteousness
und Freud in deinem Geist sind Schätz,
     and joy in your Spirit
     are treasures,
dadurch du mir schon hier
ein Vorbild weist,
     by which you have already
revealed to me a foretaste here
was Gutes du gedenkst
mir dorten zuzuteilen

     of what goodness you intend
     to allot to me there,
und mich an Leib und Seel
vollkommentlich zu heilen.

     and to completely heal me
     in body and soul.

7. CORALE
Wie sich ein Vat'r erbarmet
     As a father has compassion
üb'r seine junge Kindlein klein:
     for his young, little children:
so tut der Herr uns Armen,
so the Lord treats us, the poor,
so wir ihn kindlich fürchten rein.
so we fear him purely, like children.
Er kennt das arme Gemächte,
     He recognizes his poor creatures,
Gott weiß, wir sind nur Staub.
God knows we are but dust.
Gleichwie das Gras vom Rechen,
Just as grass from the rake,
ein Blum und fallendes Laub,
a blossom or a fallen leaf,
der Wind nur drüber wehet,
is simply blown about by the wind,
so ist es nimmer da:
so is it there no more:
also der Mensch vergehet,
thus too the human passes away,
sein End, das ist ihm nah.
his ending is close at hand.
