Text for Cantata 16
Herr Gott, dich loben wir
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Herr Gott, dich loben wir,
     Lord God, we praise you,
Herr Gott, wir danken dir.
     Lord God, we thank you.
Dich, Gott Vater in Ewigkeit,
You, God the Father in eternity,
ehret die Welt weit und breit.
the world reveres far and wide.

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
So stimmen wir bei dieser frohen Zeit
So in this happy time we chant
mit heißer Andacht an
     in fervant devotion
und legen dir,
     and lay before you
o Gott, auf dieses neue Jahr
O God, at this New Year,
das erste Herzensopfer dar.
an first offering of the heart.
Was hast du nicht von Ewigkeit vor Heil an uns getan,
What have you not eternally done for our salvation,
und was muß unsre Brust noch jetzt vor Lieb und Treu verspüren!
and what do we still now sense within our breasts from this love and devotion!
Dein Zion sieht vollkommne Ruh,
     Your Zion beholds absolute peace,
es fällt ihm Glück und Segen zu;
     it is confronted by happiness and blessing;
der Tempel schallt von Psaltern und von Harfen,
the temple resounds with psaltery and harp
und unsre Seele wallt,
     and our souls simmer,
wenn wir nur Andachtsglut in Herz und Munde führen.
as we just tend the embers of devotion in hearts and mouths.
O, sollte darum nicht ein neues Lied erklingen
O, shall not then a new song ring out
und wir in heißer Liebe singen?
and we in ardent love sing?

3. ARIA BASSO E CORO
Choir
Lasst uns jauchzen, lasst uns freuen:
Let us exult, let us rejoice:
Gottes Güt und Treu
     God’s goodness and devotion
bleibet alle Morgen neu.
     remains each morning new.
Bass
Krönt und segnet seine Hand,
     His hand crowns and blesses,
ach so glaubt, daß unser Stand
ah then believe, that our state
ewig, ewig glücklich sei.
      eternally, eternally is happiness.

4. RECITATIVO ALTO
Ach treuer Hort,
     Ah loyal refuge,
beschütz auch fernerhin dein wertes Wort,
safeguard too furthermore your precious word,
beschütze Kirch und Schule,
     safeguard church and teachings
so wird dein Reich vermehrt
     so your kingdom will increase
und Satans arge List gestört;
     and Satan’s dire ploys be disrupted;
erhalte nur den Frieden
     just preserve the peace
und die beliebte Ruh,
     and the beloved repose,
so ist uns schon genug beschieden,
then enough is already allotted us,
und uns fällt lauter Wohlsein zu.
     and we perceive total wellbeing.
Ach! Gott, du wirst das Land noch ferner wässern,
Ah! God, you will continue to water the land,
du wirst es stets verbessern,
     you will ever develop it,
du wirst es selbst mit deiner Hand
und deinem Segen bauen.
you, with your own hand and your blessing
     will cultivate it.
Wohl uns, wenn wir dir für und für,
Blessed are we, when we forever and ever,
mein Jesus und mein Heil, vertrauen.
trust in my Jesus and my salvation.

5. ARIA TENORE
Geliebter Jesu, du allein
     Beloved Jesus, you alone
sollst meiner Seelen Reichtum sein.
shall be the riches of my soul.
Wir wollen dich vor allen Schätzen
in unser treues Herze setzen,
We will place you in our devoted hearts
     before all treasures,
ja, wenn das Lebensband zerreißt,
yes, when the strand of life is torn,
stimmt unser gottvergnügter Geist
noch mit den Lippen sehnlich ein:
     our God-reveling spirit will
still fondly express by the lips:
Geliebter Jesu, du allein
     Beloved Jesus, you alone
sollst meiner Seelen Reichtum sein.
shall be the riches of my soul.

6. CORALE
All solch dein Güt wir preisen,
All such good from you we praise,
Vater ins Himmels Thron,
Father on the throne of heaven,
die du uns tust beweisen
which you do demonstrate to us
durch Christum, deinen Sohn,
     through Christ, your Son,
und bitten ferner dich,
     and [we] ask you additionally
gib uns ein friedlich Jahre,
     grant us a peaceful year,
vor allem Leid bewahre
     safeguarded from all sorrow
und nähr uns mildiglich.
      and nourish us profusely.
