Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig

1. CORO
Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig
Oh how fleeting, oh how futile
ist der Menschen Leben!
is this mortal life!
Wie ein Nebel bald entstehet
As the fog quickly emerges
und auch wieder bald vergehet,
and then quickly disappears again,
so ist unser Leben, sehet!
so is our life, behold!
2. ARIA TENORE
So schnell ein rauschend Wasser schießt,
As fast as rushing waters dash
so eilen unser Lebenstage.
so hasten the days of our lives.
Die Zeit vergeht, die Stunden eilen,
Time passes away, the hours hurry by,
wie sich die Tropfen plötzlich teilen,
like raindrops instantly scattering,
wenn alles in den Abgrund schießt.
as everything dashes into the abyss.
3. RECITATIVO ALTO
Die Freude wird zur Traurigkeit,
Joy will turn into sorrow,
die Schönheit fällt als eine Blume,
beauty fades like a bloom,
die größte Stärke wird geschwächt,
the greatest power becomes weak,
es ändert sich das Glücke mit der Zeit,
fortune is altered by time,
bald ist es aus mit Ehr und Ruhme,
honor and fame are soon over,
die Wissenschaft und was ein Mensche dichtet,
scholarship and what a human records

An irdische Schätze das Herze zu hängen,
Attaching the heart to earthly treasures

wie rauschen und reißen die wallenden Fluten,
how the seething floods rush and rend,
bis alles zerschmettert in Trümmern zerfällt.

5. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Die höchste Herrlichkeit und Pracht
The greatest majesty and pomp
umhüllt zuletzt des Todes Nacht.

Wer gleichsam als ein Gott gesessen,
Likewise, he who is seated like a god
entgeht dem Staub und Asche nicht,
cannot elude the dust and ashes,
und wenn die letzte Stunde schläget,
and when the final hour tolls
daß man ihn zu der Erde träget,
in which one bears him to the earth,
und seiner Hoheit Grund zerbricht,
and his majesty crashes to the ground,
wird seiner ganz vergessen.
