Text for Cantata 100
Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan, III
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan,
     Whatever God does, is rightly done,
es bleibt gerecht sein Wille;
     his will remains righteous.
wie er fängt meine Sachen an,
     however he commences with my concerns,
will ich ihm halten stille.
     I will wait on him in silence.
Er ist mein Gott,
     He is my God,
der in der Not
     who in any need
mich wohl weiß zu erhalten;
     knows well how to preserve me;
drum laß ich ihn nur walten.
     thus I simply let him prevail.

2. ARIA (DUETTO) ALTO E TENORE
Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan,
     Whatever God does, is rightly done,
er wird mich nicht betrügen;
     he will not betray me;
er führet mich auf rechter Bahn,
     he leads me along the proper path,
so laß ich mich begnügen
     so I let myself be content
an seiner Huld
     in his favor
und hab Geduld,
     and have patience,
er wird mein Unglück wenden,
     he will turn around my misfortune,
es steht in seinen Händen.
     it lies in his hands.

3. ARIA SOPRANO
Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan,
     Whatever God does, is rightly done,
er wird mich wohl bedenken;
     he surely is mindful of me;
er, als mein Arzt und Wundermann,
     he, as my physician and miracle worker,
wird mir nicht Gift einschenken
     will pour me no poison
vor Arzenei.
     as remedy.
Gott ist getreu,
     God is faithful,
drum will ich auf ihn bauen
     thus I will build upon him
und seiner Gnade trauen.
     and trust in his grace.

4. ARIA BASSO
Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan,
     Whatever God does, is rightly done,
er ist mein Licht, mein Leben,
     he is my light, my life,
der mir nichts Böses gönnen kann,
     who can begrudge me no evil,
ich will mich ihm ergeben
     I will devote myself to him
in Freud und Leid!
     in joy and sorrow!
Es kommt die Zeit,
     The time is coming,
da öffentlich erscheinet,
     there openly revealed
wie treulich er es meinet.
     how loyal he intends it.

5. ARIA ALTO
Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan,
     Whatever God does, is rightly done,
muß ich den Kelch gleich schmecken,
     if I must now taste of this cup,
der bitter ist nach meinem Wahn,
     made bitter by my delusion,
laß ich mich doch nicht schrecken,
     still let me not fear,
weil doch zuletzt
     for indeed in the end
ich werd ergötzt
     I shall feast
mit süßem Trost im Herzen;
     with sweet comfort in my heart;
da weichen alle Schmerzen.
     there all pains diminish.

6. CORO
Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan,
     Whatever God does, is rightly done,
dabei will ich verbleiben.
     by this I do remain.
Es mag mich auf die rauhe Bahn
     I may be on the rocky path
Not, Tod und Elend treiben,
     driven by distress, death and misery,
so wird Gott mich
     so God will
ganz väterlich
     fully, as a father,
in seinen Armen halten;
     hold me in his arms;
drum laß ich ihn nur walten.
     thus I just let him prevail.
