Text for Cantata 32
Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Dialogus
Soul (S), Jesus (B)

1. ARIA SOPRANO
Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen,
     Dearest Jesus, my desire,
sage mir, wo find ich dich?
tell me where to find you?
Soll ich dich so bald verlieren
Shall I lose you so soon
und nicht ferner bei mir spüren?
and no longer perceive you beside me?
Ach! mein Hort, erfreue mich,
     Oh! my refuge, cheer me,
laß dich höchst vergnügt umfangen.
let me embrace you in highest glee.

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Was ists, daß  du mich gesuchet?
Why is it that you sought me?
Weißt du nicht,
     Do you not know,
daß  ich sein muß in dem,
that I must be in that place
das meines Vaters ist?
      which is my father’s?

3. ARIA BASSO
Hier, in meines Vaters Stätte,
Here, at the site of my father
findt mich ein betrübter Geist.
an afflicted soul can find me.
Da kannst du mich sicher finden
     You can surely find me
und dein Herz mit mir verbinden,
and join your heart with mine,
weil dies meine Wohnung heißt.
for this is called my dwelling place.

4. RECITATIVO (DIALOG)
    SOPRANO E BASSO

S: Ach! heiliger und großer Gott,
     Oh! holy and great God,
So will ich mir denn hier bei dir
Then, here beside you, I will
beständig Trost und Hilfe suchen.
     constantly seek comfort and aid.
B: Wirst du den Erdentand verfluchen
Will you denounce the earth’s frivolities
und nur in diese Wohnung gehn,
     and simply enter this dwelling,
so kannst du hier und dort bestehn.
then you can endure both here and forth.
S: Wie lieblich ist doch deine Wohnung,
How lovely indeed is your dwelling place,
Herr, starker Zebaoth;
     Lord, mighty Jehovah;
mein Geist verlangt
     my spirit yearns
nach dem, was nur in deinem Hofe prangt.
for that which is only present in your court.
Mein Leib und Seele freuet sich
     My body and soul rejoice
in dem lebendgen Gott:
     in the living God:
Ach! Jesu, meine Brust liebt dich nur ewiglich.
Ah! Jesus, my breast simply loves you eternally.
B: So kannst du glücklich sein,
     Thus, you can be glad,
wenn Herz und Geist
     when heart and spirit
aus Liebe gegen mich entzündet heißt.
are warmed by that love ignited for me.
S:  Ach! dieses Wort, das itzo schon
     Oh! these words, which instantly
mein Herz aus Babels Grenzen reißt,
wrench my heart from the confines of Babel,
fass' ich mir andachtsvoll in meiner Seele ein.
I clutch to my soul in devotion.

5. ARIA (DUETTO) SOPRANO  E BASSO
Both: Nun verschwinden alle Plagen,
     Now vanish all plights,
nun verschwindet Ach und Schmerz.
     now vanish forlorn and pain.
S: Nun will ich nicht von dir lassen,
Now will I not leave you,
B: Und ich dich auch stets umfassen.
And I too continually will embrace you.
S:  Nun vergnüget sich mein Herz
Now is my heart at ease
B: Und kann voller Freude sagen:
And it can, filled with joy, proclaim:
Both: Nun verschwinden alle Plagen,
     Now vanish all plights,
nun verschwindet Ach und Schmerz!
      now vanish forlorn and pain!

6. CORALE
Mein Gott, öffne mir die Pforten
My God, open before me the portals
solcher Gnad und Gütigkeit,
     of such grace and goodness,
laß mich allzeit allerorten
let me at all times and all places
schmecken deine Süßigkeit!
     taste of your sweetness!
Liebe mich und treib mich an,
Love me and urge me forward,
daß  ich dich, so gut ich kann,
while I, as best I can,
wiederum umfang und liebe
embrace and love you in return
und ja nun nicht mehr betrübe.
and yes, I am now afflicted no more.
