Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ

1. CORO
Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ,
In you alone, Lord Jesus Christ,
mein Hoffnung steht auf Erden;
rest my hopes on earth;
Ich weiß, daß du mein Tröster bist,
I know that you are my comforter,
kein Trost mag mir sonst werden.
no other comfort need come to me.
Von Anbeginn ist nichts erkorn,
From the beginning there was no choice,
auf Erden war kein Mensch geborn,
on earth no human ever born,
der mir aus Nöten helfen kann.
that could help me from distress.
Ich ruf dich an,
I call upon you,
zu dem ich mein Vertrauen hab.
in whom I place my trust.
2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Mein Gott und Richter, willt du mich aus dem Gesetze fragen,
My God and judge, if you should question me according to the law,
so kann ich nicht,
weil mein Gewissen widerspricht,
auf tausend eines sagen.
then I could not reply once in a thousand,
for my conscience contradicts.
An Seelenkräften arm und an der Liebe bloß,
I am meager in mental faculty and void of love,
und meine Sünd ist schwer und übergroß;
and my sin is heavy and immense,
doch weil sie mich von Herzen reuen,
yet since I regret this from the heart,
wirst du, mein Gott und Hort,
you will, my God and refuge,
durch ein Vergebungswort
through one word of forgiveness
mich wiederum erfreuen.

3. ARIA ALTO
Wie furchtsam wankten meine Schritte,
How timidly my steps do falter,
doch Jesus hört auf meine Bitte
yet Jesus hears my request
und zeigt mich seinem Vater an.
and directs me to his father.
Mich drückten Sündenlasten nieder,
The burden of sin weighs me down
doch hilft mir Jesu Trostwort wieder,
but Jesus‘ words of comfort help me once more,
daß er für mich genung getan.
for he does plenty for me.
4. RECITATIVO TENORE
Mein Gott, verwirf mich nicht,
wiewohl ich dein Gebot noch täglich übertrete,
von deinem Angesicht!
My God, do not cast me from your countenance,
though I still transgress your commandments daily!
Das kleinste ist mir schon zu halten viel zu schwer;
Even the smallest thing is too much for me to bear;
doch, wenn ich um nichts mehr als Jesu Beistand bete,
yet, if I pray for nothing more than Jesus‘ assistance
so wird mich kein Gewissensstreit
then no mental strife
der Zuversicht berauben;
can rob me of assurance;
gib mir nur aus Barmherzigkeit
simply grant me, out of mercy,
den wahren Christenglauben!
the true Christian faith!
So stellt er sich mit guten Früchten ein
Thus, it (faith) shall be engaged with good fruits
und wird durch Liebe tätig sein.

Gott, der du die Liebe heißt,
God, you who signify love,
ach, entzünde meinen Geist,
oh, ignite my soul,
laß zu dir vor allen Dingen
meine Liebe kräftig dringen!
let my love mightily press
toward you, above all else!
Gib, daß ich aus reinem Triebe
Grant, that I, out of untainted desire,
als mich selbst den Nächsten liebe;
love my neighbor as myself;
stören Feinde meine Ruh,
when foes disrupt my rest,
sende du mir Hülfe zu!
send me your help!
6. CHORALE
Ehr sei Gott in dem höchsten Thron,
Glory be to God upon the highest throne,
dem Vater aller Güte,
to the Father of all goodness,
und Jesu Christ, sein'm liebsten Sohn,
and to Jesus Christ, his dearest son,
der uns allzeit behüte,
who protects us always,
und Gott dem Heiligen Geiste,
and to God the Holy Spirit,
der uns sein Hülf allzeit leiste,
who bestows us his help always,
damit wir ihm gefällig sein,
that we be pleasing to him,
hier in dieser Zeit
here in this moment
und folgends in der Ewigkeit.
and following into eternity.
