ERSTER TEIL (Part 1)

1. CORO
Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot
     Break your bread with the hungry
und die, so in Elend sind,
führe ins Haus!
     and let those who are in poverty into your house!
So du einen nackend siehest, 
     If you see someone naked,
so kleide ihn und entzeuch dich nicht von deinem Fleisch. 
     then clothe him, and do not hide from your own flesh.
Alsdenn wird dein Licht herfürbrechen wie die Morgenröte, 
     For then, your light will break forth like the dawn,
und deine Besserung wird schnell wachsen,
     and your betterment will swiftly increase,
und deine Gerechtigkeit wird für dir hergehen,
     and your righteousness will proceed before you,
und die Herrlichkeit des Herrn wird dich zu sich nehmen. 
      and the glory of the Lord will take up behind you.

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Der reiche Gott wirft seinen Überfluss auf uns,
     The bountiful God casts his abundance upon us,
die wir ohn ihn auch nicht den Odem haben.
     we, who without him, do not even have breath.    
Sein ist es, was wir sind; 
     Whatever we are, it is his;
er gibt nur den Genuß,doch nicht,
     he grants not merely pleasure,
daß uns allein
nur seine Schätze laben.
     that we simply lap up his treasures alone.
Sie sind der Probestein,
     These are a touchstone
wodurch er macht bekannt,
     whereby he makes aware
daß er der Armut auch die Notdurft ausgespendet,
     that unto poverty he also issues basic needs,
als er mit milder Hand,
     even as he, with a liberal hand,
was jener nötig ist, uns reichlich zugewendet.
      generously bestows on us whatever is for each essential.
Wir sollen ihm für sein gelehntes Gut
die Zinsen nicht in seine Scheu'ren bringen;
     We need not pay back any interest into his storeshed for his loan of goodness;
Barmherzigkeit, die auf dem Nächsten ruht,
     compassion, which rests on one's neighbor,
kann mehr als alle Gab ihm an das Herze dringen.
     can penetrate his heart, more than any gift.
 
 3. ARIA ALTO
Seinem Schöpfer noch auf Erden
nur im Schatten ähnlich werden,
     To become, while still on earth,
     like one’s creator, even under shadow,
ist im Vorschmack selig sein.
     is a foretaste to being blessed.
Sein Erbarmen nachzuahmen,
     Emulating his mercy
streuet hier des Segens Samen,
     scatters the seeds of blessing here
den wir dorten bringen ein.
     which we shall reap there.

4. ARIA BASSO
Wohlzutun und mitzuteilen vergesset nicht;
     Do not forget to do good and to share;
denn solche Opfer gefallen Gott wohl. 
     for such offerings are pleasing to God.
     
5. ARIA SOPRANO
Höchster, was ich habe,
     Most-High, what I have
ist nur deine Gabe.
     is simply a gift from you.
Wenn vor deinem Angesicht
ich schon mit dem meinen
Dankbar wollt erscheinen,
     If I wanted to appear before your presence
     with this my gratitude,
willt du doch kein Opfer nicht.
      you would want no offering.
 
6. RECITATIVO ALTO
Wie soll ich dir, o Herr, denn sattsamlich vergelten,
     How then shall I sufficiently reciprocate, O Lord,
was du an Leib und Seel mir hast zugutgetan?
     the good you have done me in body and soul?
Ja, was ich noch empfang, und solches gar nicht selten,
     Indeed, for that which I continue to receive, and this not at all seldom,
weil ich mich jede Stund noch deiner rühmen kann.
     I could even extol you every hour.
Ich hab nichts als den Geist, dir eigen zu ergeben,
     I have nothing other than my spirit to offer you,
dem Nächsten die Begierd, daß  ich ihm dienstbar werd,
     to my neighbor, the desire to do him service,
der Armut, was du mir gegönnt in diesem Leben,
     to the poor, what you have granted me in this life,
und, wenn es dir gefällt, den schwachen Leib der Erd.
     and, when it pleases you, to the earth this feeble body.
Ich bringe, was ich kann, Herr, lass es dir behagen,
     I bring you what I can, Lord, let it be suitable to you,
daß ich, was du versprichst, auch einst davon mög tragen.
      that I may bear at least one of the things you have bid me.
 
7. CORALE
Selig sind, die aus Erbarmen
     Blessed are they, who out of mercy
sich annehmen fremder Not,
     take upon themselves another's need,
sind mitleidig mit den Armen,
     are compassionate to the poor,
bitten treulich für sie Gott.
     beseeching God faithfully on their behalf.
Die behülflich sind mit Rat,
     Those who are instrumental in guidance,
auch, womöglich, mit der Tat,
     and also, where possible, by their deeds,
werden wieder Hülf empfangen
     will receive help in return
und Barmherzigkeit erlangen.
      and obtain mercy.
