Text for Cantata 4
Christ lag in Todesbanden
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1.  SINFONIA

2.  VERSUS 1 - CORO
Christ lag in Todes Banden
     Christ lay in the bonds of death
für unser Sünd gegeben,
     given for our sins,
er ist wieder erstanden
     he is risen again
und hat uns bracht das Leben.
     and has brought us life.
Des wir sollen fröhlich sein,
     For this we shall be glad,
Gott loben und ihm dankbar sein
     praise God and be grateful to him
und singen
     and sing
Halleluja!

3.  VERSUS 2 - DUETTO SOPRANO E ALTO

Den Tod niemand zwingen kunnt
     No one could have conquered death
bei allen Menschenkindern;
     among all humanity’s children;
das macht' alles unser Sünd,
     this was entirely caused by our sin,
kein Unschuld war zu finden.
     no innocence was to be found.
Davon kam der Tod so bald
     Hence death came so swiftly
und nahm über uns Gewalt,
     and wielded power over us,
heilt uns in seinem Reich gefangen.
     holding us captive in its realm.
Halleluja!

4.  VERSUS 3 - CORALE TENORE

Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn,
     Jesus Christ, God's Son,
an unsre Statt ist kommen
     has come in our stead
und hat die Sünde weggetan,
     and has done away with sin,
damit dem Tod genommen
     thereby depriving death
all sein Recht and sein Gewalt;
     of all its privilege and power;
da bleibet nichts denn Tods Gestalt,
     there remains nothing of death’s form,
den Stachel hat er verloren.
     it has lost its sting.
Halleluja!

5.  VERSUS 4 - CORO
Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg,
     It was a miraculous battle
da Tod und Leben rungen;
     when death and life wrestled;
das Leben da behielt den Sieg,
     life there sustained the victory,
es hat den Tod verschlungen.
     it swallowed up death.
Die Schrift hat verkündiget das,
     The scriptures had foretold this
wie ein Tod den andern fraß,
     how one death would devour the other,
ein Spott aus dem Tod ist worden.
     a mockery is become of death.
Halleluja!

6.  VERSUS 5 - ARIA BASSO
Hie ist das rechte Osterlamm,
     Here is the true Paschal Lamb
davon Gott hat geboten,
     of which God has offered,
das ist hoch an des Kreuzes Stamm
     it is, high on the stem of the cross,
in heißer Lieb gebraten.
     roasted in ardent love.
Das Blut zeichnet unser Tür,
     The blood marks our door,
das hält der Glaub’ dem Tode für,
     that faith might hold death at bay,
der Würger kann uns nicht mehr schaden.
     the slayer can no longer harm us.
Halleluja!

7.  VERSUS 6 - DUETTO SOPRANO E TENORE
So feiern wir das hohe Fest
     So we celebrate the high feast
mit Herzensfreud and Wonne,
     with joy of heart and bliss
das uns der Herr erscheinen läßt.
     which the Lord lets shine upon us.
Er ist selber die Sonne,
     He himself is the sun
der durch seiner Gnaden Glanz
     who, through the splendor of his grace
erleuchtet unsre Herzen ganz,
     illuminates our hearts completely,
der Sünden Nacht ist verschwunden.
     the night of sin is vanquished.
Halleluja!

8.  VERSUS 7 - CORALE
Wir essen und wir leben wohl
     We eat and live indeed
im rechten Osterfladen;
     of the true Pascal bread;
der alte Sauerteig nicht soll
     the ancient leavening need not
sein bei dem Wort der Gnaden.
     remain, beside the word of grace.
Christus will die Koste sein
     Christ will be the food
und speisen die Seel allein,
     and alone nourish the soul,
der Glaub will keins andern leben.
     faith will subsist by no other means.
Halleluja!
