Text for Cantata 55
Ich armer Mensch, ich Sündenknecht
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. ARIA TENORE
Ich armer Mensch, ich Sündenknecht,
     I a poor man, I a slave of sin,
ich geh vor Gottes Angesichte
     I pass before God’s countenance
mit Furcht und Zittern zum Gerichte.
     with fear and trembling unto judgment.
Er ist gerecht, ich ungerecht.
     He is righteous, I unrighteous.
Ich armer Mensch, ich Sündenknecht!
     I a poor man, I a slave of sin!

2. RECITATIVO TENORE
Ich habe wider Gott gehandelt
     I have dealt against God
und bin demselben Pfad, den er mir
vorgeschrieben hat, nicht nachgewandelt.

     and not followed behind him upon
     the very path he prescribed for me.
Wohin? soll ich der Morgenröte Flügel
zu meiner Flucht erkiesen,

     To where? Shall I choose the wings
     of the dawn as my flight,
die mich zum letzten Meere wiesen,
     which expel me to the farthest seas,
so wird mich doch die Hand des Allerhöchsten finden
     even there the hand of the Most High would find me
und mir die Sündenrute binden.
     and bind together the lash for my sins.
Ach ja! Wenn gleich die Höll ein Bette
vor mich und meine Sünden hätte,

     Oh, yes! Even if the abyss made a bed
     before me and my sins,
so wäre doch der Grimm des Höchsten da.
     so too would the wrath of the Highest be there.
Die Erde schützt mich nicht,
     The earth does not protect me,
sie droht mich Scheusal zu verschlingen;
     it threatens with the beast to devour me;
und will ich mich zum Himmel schwingen,
     and if I vault up into the sky,
da wohnet Gott, der mir das Urteil spricht.
     there God resides, who pronounces
     judgment before me.

3. ARIA TENORE
Erbarme dich!
     Have mercy!
Laß die Tränen dich erweichen,
     Let these tears soften you,
laß sie dir zu Herzen reichen;
     let them reach your heart;
laß um Jesu Christi willen
     let, by the will of Jesus Christ,
deinen Zorn des Eifers stillen!
     the fervor of your wrath be stilled!
Erbarme dich!
     Have mercy!

4. RECITATIVO TENORE
Erbarme dich!
     Have mercy!
Jedoch nun tröst ich mich,
     Even so, now I console myself,
ich will nicht für Gerichte stehen
     I do not want to stand before judgment
und lieber vor dem Gnadenthron
zu meinem frommen Vater gehen.
     but prefer to proceed before the throne of grace
     to my devout Father.
Ich halt ihm seinen Sohn,
sein Leiden, sein Erlösen für,
     I submit to him his son,
     his suffering, his redemption,
wie er für meine Schuld bezahlet und genug getan,
     how he has paid for my guilt and done sufficient,
und bitt ihn um Geduld,
     and beseech him for patience,
hinfüro will ich's nicht mehr tun.
     henceforth I will do it no more.
So nimmt mich Gott zu Gnaden wieder an.
     Thus accept me, God, into grace once more.

5. CORALE
Bin ich gleich von dir gewichen,
     Even though I have strayed from you,
stell ich mich doch wieder ein;
     I present myself yet once again;
hat uns doch dein Sohn verglichen
     your son indeed has likened himself unto us
durch sein Angst und Todespein.
     through his agony and pain of death.
Ich verleugne nicht die Schuld,
     I do not deny my guilt,
aber deine Gnad und Huld
     but your mercy and grace
ist viel größer als die Sünde,
     are much greater than the sins
die ich stets bei mir befinde.
     ever present in me.
