Text for Cantata 56
Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. ARIA BASSO
Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen,
     I will gladly bear the staff of the cross,
er kömmt von Gottes lieber Hand.
     it is extended from God's dear hand.
Der führet mich nach meinen Plagen
     It leads me from my plight
zu Gott, in das gelobte Land.
     unto God, in the Promised Land.
     There I will  lay my troubles all at once in the grave
da wischt mir die Tränen mein Heiland selbst ab.
      there my Savior himself will wipe away my tears.

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Mein Wandel auf der Welt
     My sojourn in this world
ist einer Schiffahrt gleich:
     is like a ship’s voyage:
Betrübnis, Kreuz und Not
     grief, cross and agony
sind Wellen, welche mich bedecken
     are the waves which cover me
und auf den Tod mich täglich schrecken;
     and daily scare me to death;
mein Anker aber, der mich hält,
     my anchor, however, which holds me fast
     is the mercy by which God often cheers me.
     He calls out thus to me:  "I am with you,
ich will dich nicht verlassen noch versäumen!
     I will neither leave nor forsake you!"
     And when the rage-filled foaming reaches its end,
     then I will step off the ship into my city,
die ist das Himmelreich,
     which is the Kingdom of Heaven,
wohin ich mit den Frommen
     into which I, with the devout,
aus vielem Trübsal werde kommen.
      will come out of much tribulation.

3. ARIA BASSO
Endlich, endlich wird mein Joch
     Finally, finally, my yoke will
wieder von mir weichen müssen.
     be loosened from me once more.
Da krieg ich in dem Herren Kraft,
     There I will receive strength in the Lord ,
da hab ich Adlers Eigenschaft,
     there I will take on the qualities of an eagle,
da fahr ich auf von dieser Erden
     there I will journey upward away from this earth
und laufe sonder matt zu werden.
     and run without growing weary.
O gescheh es heute noch!
      O let it happen yet today!

4. RECITATIVO E ARIOSO BASSO
Ich stehe fertig und bereit,
     I stand ready and prepared,

     with yearning and  longing, to receive from the hands of Jesus
     the inheritance of my blessing.
Wie wohl wird mir gescheh'n,
     How well it will befall me,
     when I behold that port of rest.
     There I will lay my troubles all at once in the grave
da wischt mir die Tränen mein Heiland selbst ab.
     there my Savior himself will wipe away my tears.

5. CORALE
Komm, o Tod, du Schlafes Bruder,
     Come, O death, you brother of sleep,
komm und führe mich nur fort;
     come and simply lead me forth;
löse meines Schiffleins Ruder,
     let loose the rudder of my tiny ship,
bringe mich an sichern Port.
     bring me into safe port.
Es mag, wer da will, dich scheuen,
     Whoever wants, may fear you,
du kannst mich vielmehr erfreuen;
     you can delight me all the more;
denn durch dich komm ich herein
     for through you I come within
zu dem schönsten Jesulein.
      unto this most lovely baby Jesus.
