Text for Cantata 58
Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Dialogus
1. CORALE E ARIA SOPRANO BASSO
Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid
     Oh God, so many heartaches
begegnet mir zu dieser Zeit!
     currently confront me!
Der schmale Weg ist Trübsals voll,
den ich zum Himmel wandern soll.
The narrow path upon which I shall wander unto heaven
      is full of tribulations,
Nur Geduld, Geduld, mein Herze,
     Mere patience, patience, my heart,
es ist eine böse Zeit!
     it is an evil time!
Doch der Gang zur Seligkeit
     Yet the course to blessedness
führt zur Freude nach dem Schmerze.
leads unto joy following the pain.

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Verfolgt dich gleich die arge Welt,
Even if the wicked world pursues you,
so hast du dennoch Gott zum Freunde,
you still have God as a friend,
der wider deine Feinde
     with him against your enemies
dir stets den Rücken hält.
you are protected from the flanks.
Und wenn der wütende Herodes
     And when the infuriated Herod
das Urteil eines schmähen Todes
gleich über unsern Heiland fällt,
     once decreed as sentence
a vile death for our Savior,
so kommt ein Engel in der Nacht,
so came an angel in the night
der lässet Joseph träumen,
     who caused Joseph to dream,
daß er dem Würger soll entfliehen
that he should escape the slayer
und nach Ägypten ziehen.
     and flee to Egypt.
Gott hat ein Wort,
     God has a word
das dich vertrauend macht.
   that makes you confident.
Er spricht:
     He speaks:
wenn Berg und Hügel niedersinken,
     when mountain and hill collapse,
wenn dich die Flut des Wassers will ertrinken,
when the flooding waters would drown you,
so will ich dich doch nicht verlassen noch versäumen.
even then will I neither abandon nor forsake you.

3. ARIA SOPRANO
Ich bin vergnügt in meinem Leiden,
I am cheerful in my suffering,
denn Gott ist meine Zuversicht.
     for God is my assurance.
Ich habe sichern Brief und Siegel,
I have certain document and seal,
und dieses ist der feste Riegel,
     and these are securely bolted,
den bricht die Hölle selber nicht.
     hell itself cannot break it.

4. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Kann es die Welt nicht lassen,
     When the world cannot abandon
mich zu verfolgen und zu hassen,
     pursuing and despising me,
so weist mir Gottes Hand ein andres Land.
God’s hand points out another land.
Ach! könnt es heute noch geschehen,
Alas! could it occur yet today,
daß ich mein Eden möchte sehen!
that I might behold my Eden!

5. CORALE E ARIA SOPRANO BASSO
Ich hab für mir ein schwere Reis
I have before me a difficult journey
zu dir ins Himmels Paradeis,
     unto you in heaven’s paradise,
da ist mein rechtes Vaterland,
     where my true fatherland is,
daran du dein Blut hast gewandt.
for this you have spent your blood.
Nur getrost, getrost, ihr Herzen,
     Merely comfort, comfort, you hearts,
hier ist Angst, dort Herrlichkeit!
here there is fear, there glory!
Und die Freude jener Zeit
And the joy of all time
überwieget alle Schmerzen.
     will outweigh all suffering.
