Text for Cantata 67
Halt’ im Gedächtnis Jesum Christ
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Halt’ im Gedächtnis Jesum Christ,
     Bear in remembrance Jesus Christ
der auferstanden ist von den Toten.
who is risen from the dead.

2. ARIA TENORE
Mein Jesus ist erstanden,
     My Jesus is risen,
allein, was schreckt mich noch?
so why do I still fear?
Mein Glaube kennt des Heilands Sieg,
My faith recognizes the savior’s victory,
doch fühlt mein Herze Streit und Krieg,
yet my heart perceives battle and war,
mein Heil, erscheine doch!
     my savior, do appear!

3. RECITATIVO ALTO
Mein Jesu, heißest du des Todes Gift
My Jesus, you are named the poison of death
und eine Pestilenz der Hölle:
     and a pestilence to Hell:
ach, daß mich noch Gefahr und Schrecken trifft!
alas, that I am still confronted by peril and fright!
Du legtest selbst auf unsre Zungen
You yourself place upon our tongues
ein Loblied, welches wir gesungen:
a song of praise, which we have sung:

4. CORALE
Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag,
     The glorious day has appeared,
dran sich niemand gnug freuen mag:
in which no one can rejoice enough:
Christ, unser Herr, heut triumphiert,
     Christ, our Lord, triumphs today,
all sein Feind er gefangen führt.
he leads all his foes captive.
Alleluja!
     Alleluia!

5. RECITATIVO ALTO
Doch scheinet fast, daß mich der Feinde Rest,
Still, it almost appears that the remainder of my enemies,
den ich zu groß und allzu schrecklich finde,
whom I find too great and far too formidable,
nicht ruhig bleiben läßt.
will not leave [me] in peace.
Doch, wenn du mir den Sieg erworben hast,
Yet, if you have secured the victory for me
so streite selbst mit mir, mit deinem Kinde.
then I will fight within myself, within your child.
Ja, ja, wir spüren schon im Glauben,
Yes, yes, we already sense in faith,
daß du, o Friedefürst,
that you, O prince of peace,
dein Wort und Werk an uns erfüllen wirst.
will fulfill your word and deeds within us.

6. ARIA BASSO E CORO
Bass
Friede sei mit euch!
     Peace be with you!
Soprano, Alto, Tenor
Wohl uns! Jesus hilft uns kämpfen
Blessed are we! Jesus helps us fight
und die Wut der Feinde dämpfen,
and stifles the raging of our foes,
Hölle, Satan, weich!
     Hell and Satan, yield!
Bass
Friede sei mit euch!
     Peace be with you!
Soprano, Alto, Tenor
Jesus holet uns zum Frieden
     Jesus delivers us unto peace
und erquicket in uns Müden
Geist und Leib zugleich.
and revives at once spirit and body
     within us, the weary.
Bass
Friede sei mit euch!
     Peace be with you!
Soprano, Alto, Tenor
O Herr, hilf und lass gelingen,
O Lord, help and let us succeed,
durch den Tod hindurchzudringen
     pressing forward through death
in dein Ehrenreich!
     into your kingdom of glory!
Bass
Friede sei mit euch!
     Peace be with you!

7. CORALE
Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ,
You, prince of peace, Lord Jesus Christ,
wahr' Mensch und wahrer Gott,
     true human and true God,
ein starker Nothelfer du bist
you are a mighty helper in need
im Leben und im Tod:
     in life and in death:
drum wir allein
     thus we alone
im Namen dein
     in your name
zu deinem Vater schreien.
     cry unto the Father.
