Ein' feste Burg ist unser Gott

1. CORO
Ein' feste Burg ist unser Gott,
A solid fortress is our God,
ein' gute Wehr und Waffen;
a good defense and weapon;
er hilft uns frei aus aller Not,
he helps free us from all adversity
die uns jetzt hat betroffen.
which now confronts us.
Der alte böse Feind,
The ancient evil foe,
mit Ernst er's jetzt meint,
his intent is now earnest,
groß' Macht und viel List,
great might and much cunning
sein' grausam Rüstung ist,
is his gruesome armor,
auf Erd' ist nicht seins gleichen.
on earth is not his equal.

Mit unsrer Macht ist nichts getan,
By our own might nothing is done,
wir sind gar bald verloren.
quite soon we are lost.
Es streit't für uns der rechte Mann,
Fighting for us is the right man
den Gott hat selbst erkoren.
whom God himself has elected.
Fragst du, wer der ist?
You ask, who he is?
Er heißt Jesus Christ,
He is named Jesus Christ,
der Herre Zebaoth,
the Lord Sabaoth,
und ist kein ander Gott,
and is none other than God,
das Feld muß er behalten.
he surely commands the field.

Alles was von Gott geboren,
All that is born of God
ist zum Siegen auserkoren
is preordained for victory.
Wer bei Christi Blutpanier,
Whoever is beside Christ's banner of blood,
in der Taufe Treu' geschworen,
sworn loyal in baptism,
siegt im Geiste für und für.
triumphs in the spirit forever and ever.

Erwäge doch, Kind Gottes,
Yet consider, child of God,
die so große Liebe, da Jesus sich
this, so great a love, which Jesus himself
mit seinem Blute dir verschrieben,
consigned to you with his blood,
womit er dich zum Siege wider Satans Heer
und wider Welt und Sünde geworben hat.
whereby he recruited you for victory
over Satan's army and the world and sin.
Gib nicht in deiner Seele dem Satan
und den Lastern statt!
Allow neither Satan nor vice
a place within your soul!
Laß nicht dein Herz,
den Himmel Gottes auf der Erden,
Let not your heart,
God’s Heaven on earth,
zur Wüste werden!

Repent of your guilt painstakingly

Treib' Welt und Satan aus,
Drive out the world and Satan,
und laß dein Bild in mir
erneuert prangen!
and let your image
shine in me renewed!
Weg, schnöder Sündengraus!
Be gone, filthy horror of sin!
5. CORALE
Und wenn die Welt voll Teufel wär'
And if the world were filled with devils
und wollten uns verschlingen,
and they wanted to devour us,
so fürchten wir uns nicht so sehr,
still we would hardly fear,
es soll uns doch gelingen.
for we shall yet succeed.
Der Fürst dieser Welt,
The prince of this world,
wie sau'r er sich stellt,
as bitterly as he tries,
tut er uns doch nichts,
still does not affect us,
das macht, er ist gericht't;
for in doing so, he is condemned;
ein Wörtlein kann ihn fällen.

So stehe denn bei Christi blutgefärbter Fahne, o Seele, fest,
So stand fast beside Christ's blood-red flag, O soul,
und glaube, daß dein Haupt dich nicht verläßt,
and believe that your captain will not desert you,
ja daß sein Sieg auch dir den Weg zu deiner Krone bahne.
indeed, that his victory also channels for you
the path to your own crown.
Tritt freudig an den Krieg!
Stride joyously unto battle!
Wirst du nur Gottes Wort, so hören als bewahren,
You need only hear the word of God as your protection,
so wird der Feind gezwungen auszufahren,
thus the enemy will be forced to retreat,
dein Heiland bleibt dein Heil,
your Savior remains your salvation,
dein Heiland bleibt dein Hort.
your Savior remains your stronghold.
7. ARIA DUETTO ALTO E TENORE
Wie selig sind doch sie,
die Gott im Munde tragen,
How blessed indeed are they
who bear God in their mouths;
doch sel'ger ist das Herz,
das ihn im Glauben trägt.
yet even more blessed is the heart
that bears God in faith.
Es bleibet unbesiegt
und kann die Feinde schlagen,
It remains unconquered
and can strike down the enemy,
und wird zuletzt gekrönt,
wenn es den Tod erlegt.
and in the end it will be crowned
as it vanquishes death.
8. CORALE
Das Wort sie sollen lassen stahn
The word they shall leave standing
und kein' Dank dazu haben.
and no thanks be offered for it.
Er ist bei uns wohl auf dem Plan
He is indeed beside us in his plan
mit seinem Geist und Gaben.
with his Spirit and bounties.
Nehmen sie uns den Leib,
Were they to take our body,
Gut, Ehr', Kind und Weib,
goods, honor, child and wife,
laß fahren dahin,
let these be gone,
sie habens kein' Gewinn,
they have gained nothing,
das Reich muß uns doch bleiben.
