Text for Cantata 90
Es reißet euch ein schrecklich Ende
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. ARIA TENORE
Es reißet euch ein schrecklich Ende,
     You journey toward a terrifying ending,
ihr sündlichen Verächter, hin.
     you sinful defilers.
Der Sünden Maß ist voll gemessen,
     The extent of sin is at full measure,
doch euer ganz verstockter Sinn
     yet your utterly stubborn mind
hat seines Richters ganz vergessen.
     has entirely forgotten its judge.

2. RECITATIVO ALTO
Des Höchsten Güte wird von Tag zu Tage neu,
     The goodness of the Most-High
     is renewed day after day,
der Undank aber sündigt stets auf Gnade.
     the ungrateful however sins incessantly
     despite grace.
O, ein verzweifelt böser Schade,
     O, a distressful evil shame,
so dich in dein Verderben führt.
     thus you are driven to your demise.
Ach! wird dein Herze nicht gerührt,
     Alas! will not your heart be stirred,
daß Gottes Güte dich zur wahren Buße leitet?
     that God’s goodness might
     lead you to true repentance?
Sein treues Herze läßet sich
zu ungezählter Wohltat schauen:

     His abiding heart is revealed
     for incalculable benefit:
bald läßt er Tempel auferbauen,
     soon he has the temple constructed,
bald wird die Aue zubereitet,
     soon the pasture will be prepared
auf die des Wortes Manna fällt,
     upon which the word’s manna falls,
so dich erhält.
     to uphold you so.
Jedoch, o! Bosheit dieses Lebens,
     Nevertheless, O wicked of this life,
die Wohltat ist an dir vergebens.
     this benefit comes to you in vain.

3. ARIA BASSO
So löschet im Eifer der rächende Richter
den Leuchter des Wortes zur Strafe doch aus.

     Thus the vengeful judge zealously indeed
     extinguishes the lamp of the word, as punishment.
Ihr müßet, o Sünder, durch euer Verschulden
     You must, O sinners, because of your transgressions
den Greuel an heiliger Stätte erdulden,
     suffer this horror on holy ground,
ihr machet aus Tempeln ein mörderisch Haus.
     you make the temple into a house of murder.

4. RECITATIVO TENORE
Doch Gottes Auge sieht auf uns als Auserwählte:
     But the eye of God views us as the chosen ones:
und wenn kein Mensch der Feinde Menge zählte,
     and while no one can count the multitude of foes
so schützt uns doch der Held in Israel,
     the champion of Israel protects us still,
es hemmt sein Arm der Feinde Lauf
     his arm hinders the enemy’s advance
und hilft uns auf;
     and helps us up;
des Wortes Kraft wird in Gefahr
     in peril the power of the word becomes
um so viel mehr erkannt und offenbar.
     even more recognizable and apparent.

5. CORALE
Leit uns mit deiner rechten Hand
     Lead us with your right hand
und segne unser Stadt und Land;
     and bless our city and our land;
gib uns allzeit dein heilges Wort,
     grant us always your holy word,
behüt für's Teufels List und Mord;
     protect us from the Devil’s cunning and murder;
verleih ein selges Stündelein,
     impart a blessed final hour,
auf daß wir ewig bei dir sein!
     that we might ever be with you!
