Text for BWV 98
Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan,
     Whatever God does, is rightly done,
es bleibt gerecht sein Wille;
     his will remains righteous.
wie er fängt meine Sachen an,
     however he commences with my concerns,
will ich ihm halten stille.
     I quietly wait upon him.
Er ist mein Gott,
     He is my God,
der in der Not
     who in any need
mich wohl weiß zu erhalten;
     knows well how to preserve me;
drum laß ich ihn nur walten.
     thus I simply let him prevail.

 2. RECITATIVO TENORE
Ach Gott! wenn wirst du mich einmal
von meiner Leidensqual, von meiner Angst befreien?
     Oh, God! when will you finally liberate me
     from my painful woes, from my fears?
Wie lange soll ich Tag und Nacht um Hilfe schreien?
     How long, day and night, shall I cry for help?
Und ist kein Retter da!
     And no rescuer is there!
Der Herr ist denen allen nah,
     The Lord is near by each of them
die seiner Macht und seiner Huld vertrauen.
     who trust in his power and his grace.
Drum will ich meine Zuversicht auf Gott alleine bauen,
     Therefore I will build my confidence on God alone,
denn er verläßt die Seinen nicht.
      for he does not forsake his own.

3. ARIA SOPRANO
Hört, ihr Augen, auf zu weinen!
     Cease, you eyes, from crying!
Trag ich doch
     Rather, I carry
mit Geduld mein schweres Joch.
     my heavy yoke with patience.
Gott, der Vater, lebet noch,
     God the Father lives on,
von den Seinen
     of his own
läßt er keinen.
     none are abandoned.
Hört, ihr Augen, auf zu weinen!
      Cease, you eyes, from crying!

4. RECITATIVO ALTO
Gott hat ein Herz, das des Erbarmens Überfluß;
     God has a heart that is overflowing with mercy;
und wenn der Mund vor seinen Ohren klagt
     and when a mouth laments before his ears
und ihm des Kreuzes Schmerz
im Glauben und Vertrauen sagt,
     and relates to him in faith and trust
     its pain, as of the cross
so bricht in ihm das Herz,
     so breaks his heart
daß er sich über uns erbarmen muß.
     that he must have mercy on us.
Er hält sein Wort;
     He keeps his word;
er saget: Klopfet an,
     he says, “knock,
so wird euch aufgetan!
     so will it be opened to you!”
Drum laßt uns alsofort,
     Thus let us immediately,
wenn wir in höchsten Nöten schweben,
     when we reel in great distress,
das Herz zu Gott allein erheben!
      lift up our hearts to God alone!

5. ARIA BASSO
Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht,
     I’ll not let go of my Jesus,
bis mich erst sein Angesicht
wird erhören oder segnen.
     until his countenance first
     considers me or blesses me.
Er allein
     He alone
soll mein Schutz in allem sein,
     shall be my protection from anything
was mir Übels kann begegnen.
      that of evil can confront me.
