TEXT FOR CANTATA 109
Ich glaube, lieber Herr, hilf meinem Unglauben!
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Ich glaube, lieber Herr,
     I will believe, dear Lord,
hilf meinem Unglauben!
     help my disbelief!

2. RECITATIVO TENORE
Des Herren Hand ist ja noch nicht verkürzt,
     The Lord's hand has indeed
     never yet been restrained,
mir kann geholfen werden.
     I can be helped.
Ach nein, ich sinke schon zur Erden vor Sorge,
     But no, I already drop to the earth in fear
daß sie mich zu Boden stürzt.
     that they will knock me to the ground.
Der Höchste will, sein Vaterherze bricht.
     The Most High wills it, his fatherly heart is breaking.
Ach nein! er hört die Sünder nicht.
     But no! he does not hear sinners.
Er wird, er muß dir bald zu helfen eilen,
     He will, he must soon hasten to help you
um deine Not zu heilen.
     to heal your distress.
Ach nein, es bleibet mir um Trost sehr bange;
     But no, I remain most anxious for consoling;
ach Herr, wie lange?
     alas Lord, how much longer?

3. ARIA TENORE
Wie zweifelhaftig ist mein Hoffen,
     How doubt-filled is my hope,
wie wanket mein geängstigt Herz!
     how my anxious heart wavers!
Des Glaubens Docht glimmt kaum hervor,
     The wick of faith barely illumines what lies ahead,
es bricht dies fast zustoßne Rohr,
     this reed, thrust forth, is almost ready to break,
die Furcht macht stetig neuen Schmerz.
     fear procures ever new suffering.

4. RECITATIVO ALTO
O fasse dich, du zweifelhafter Mut,
     O compose yourself, you dubious courage,
weil Jesus itzt noch Wunder tut!
     for Jesus even now does wonders!
Die Glaubensaugen werden schauen
     Eyes of faith will behold
das Heil des Herrn;
     the salvation of the Lord;
scheint die Erfüllung allzufern,
     even if contentment seems all too far distant
so kannst du doch auf die Verheißung bauen.
     so can you still build upon the promise.

5. ARIA ALTO
Der Heiland kennet ja die Seinen,
     The Savior indeed recognizes his own
wenn ihre Hoffnung hilflos liegt.
     when their hope lies helpless.
Wenn Fleisch und Geist in ihnen streiten,
     When flesh and spirit struggle within them
so steht er ihnen selbst zur Seiten,
     then he himself stands at their side
damit zuletzt der Glaube siegt.
     that in the end faith triumphs.

6. CORALE
Wer hofft in Gott und dem vertraut,
     Whoever hopes in God and trusts him
der wird nimmer zuschanden;
     will never come to ruin;
denn wer auf diesen Felsen baut,
     for whoever builds upon this stone,
ob ihm gleich geht zuhanden viel Unfalls hie,
     even though many a misfortune
     here confront him,
hab ich doch nie den Menschen sehen fallen,
der sich verläßt auf Gottes Trost;
     I have never yet seen that person fall
     who relies upon God’s solace;
er hilft sein' Gläub'gen allen.
     he helps all his believers.
