Ach! ich sehe, itzt,
Alas! at present I behold
da ich zur Hochzeit gehe,
as I approach the wedding,
Wohl und Wehe.
well and woe.
Seelengift und Lebensbrot,
Poison for the soul and bread of life,
Himmel, Hölle, Leben, Tod,
Heaven, Hell, life, death,
Himmelsglanz und Höllenflammen
Heaven's beams and Hell's flames
sind beisammen.
are all amidst each other.
Jesu, hilf, daß ich bestehe!
Jesus, help me to survive!
2. RECITATIVO TENORE
O großes Hochzeitfest,
O great wedding feast
darzu der Himmelskönig
to which the King of Heaven
die Menschen rufen läßt!
beckons humanity!
Ist denn die arme Braut,
Is then this feeble bride,
die menschliche Natur,
human nature,
nicht viel zu schlecht und wenig,
not far too inferior and meager
daß sich mit ihr der Sohn des Höchsten traut?
to be wed to the Son of the Most-High?
O großes Hochzeitfest,
O great wedding feast,
wie ist das Fleisch zu solcher Ehre kommen,
how did this flesh come to such honor
daß Gottes Sohn
that God’s Son
es hat auf ewig angenommen?
is espoused to it for eternity?
Der Himmel ist sein Thron,
The sky is his throne,
die Erde dient zum Schemel seinen Füßen,
the earth serves as footstool to his feet,
noch will er diese Welt
als Braut und Liebste küssen!
yet he will caress this world
as bride and beloved!
Das Hochzeitmahl ist angestellt,
The wedding meal is ordered,
das Mastvieh ist geschlachtet;
the fattened calf is slaughtered;
wie herrlich ist doch alles zubereitet!
how gloriously indeed all is prepared!
Wie selig ist, den hier der Glaube leitet,
How blessed is the one
whom faith has led here,
und wie verflucht ist doch,
and how damned indeed is
der dieses Mahl verachtet!
anyone who denigrates this meal!
3. ARIA SOPRANO
Jesu, Brunnquell aller Gnaden,
Jesus, fountainhead of all grace,
labe mich elenden Gast,
refresh me, a wretched guest,
weil du mich berufen hast!
for you have summoned me!
Ich bin matt, schwach und beladen,
I am feeble, weak and heavy laden,
ach! erquicke meine Seele,
oh! revive my soul,
ach! wie hungert mich nach dir!
oh! how I hunger for you!
Lebensbrot, das ich erwähle,
Bread of life, which I select,
komm, vereine dich mit mir!
come, unite yourself with me!
4. RECITATIVO ALTO
Mein Jesu, laß mich nicht
My Jesus, do not allow me
zur Hochzeit unbekleidet kommen,
to arrive at the wedding misdressed,
daß mich nicht treu dein Gericht;
that I not match your table;
mit Schrecken hab ich ja vernommen,
with horror I indeed have witnessed
wie du den kühnen Hochzeitgast,
der ohne Kleid erschienen,
verworfen und verdammet hast!
how you have cast out and condemned
that esteemed wedding guest
who showed up improperly dressed!
Ich weiß auch mein Unwürdigkeit:
I know my unworthiness too well:
ach! schenke mir des Glaubens Hochzeitkleid;
oh! bestow on me the wedding gown of faith;
laß dein Verdienst zu meinem Schmucke dienen!
let your merit serve as my jewelry!
Gib mir zum Hochzeitkleide
Grant me as wedding clothes
den Rock des Heils, der Unschuld weiße Seide!
the robe of salvation,
the white silk of innocence!
Ach! laß dein Blut, den hohen Purpur,
Oh! let your blood, that noble crimson,
decken den alten Adamsrock und seine Lasterflecken,
cover the ancient robe of Adam
and the scars of his iniquity,
so werd ich schön und rein
thus I will become lovely and pure
und dir willkommen sein,
and be welcomed by you,
so werd ich würdiglich das Mahl des Lammes schmecken.
thus I will worthily taste the meal of the lamb.

In meinem Gott bin ich erfreut!
In my God I do delight!
Die Liebesmacht hat ihn bewogen,
The power of love has compelled him
daß er mir in der Gnadenzeit

die Kleider der Gerechtigkeit.
