Text for Cantata 177
Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ,
     I cry to you, Lord Jesus Christ,
ich bitt, erhör mein Klagen,
     I plead, hear my lament,
verleih mir Gnad zu dieser Frist,
     impart grace to me
     at the appointed time,
laß mich doch nicht verzagen;
     allow me indeed no despair;
den rechten Glauben, Herr, ich mein,
     I intend, Lord, a true faith
den wollest du mir geben,
     which you would grant me,
dir zu leben,
     to live for you,
mein‘m Nächsten nütz zu sein,
     to be of benefit to my neighbor,
dein Wort zu halten eben.
     to hold straight your word.

2. ARIA ALTO
Ich bitt noch mehr, o Herre Gott,
     What more, O Lord God, I ask,
du kannst es mir wohl geben:
     you can surely grant it to me:
daß ich werd nimmermehr zu Spott,
     that I never again be derided,
die Hoffnung gib darneben,
     grant me hope along with this
voraus, wenn ich muß hier davon,
     anticipating when I must leave here,
daß ich dir mög vertrauen
     that I might trust in you
und nicht bauen
     and not depend
auf alles mein Tun,
     upon my deeds alone
sonst wird mich's ewig reuen.
     lest it be to my eternal regret.

3. ARIA SOPRANO
Verleih, daß ich aus Herzensgrund
     Grant, that I, from
     the depths of my heart,
mein' Feinden mög vergeben,
     may forgive my enemies,
verzeih mir auch zu dieser Stund,
     pardon me as well in this hour,
gib mir ein neues Leben;
     give me a new life;
dein Wort mein Speis laß allweg sein,
     let your word be everywhere my fare
damit mein Seel zu nähren,
     with which to nurture my soul,
mich zu wehren,
     to defend me
wenn Unglück geht daher,
     when harm draws near
das mich bald möcht abkehren.
     trying swiftly to undo me.

4. ARIA TENORE
Laß mich kein Lust noch Furcht von dir
in dieser Welt abwenden.
     Let no desire nor fear
     in this world avert me from you.
Feständigsein ans End gib mir,
     Grant me perseverance to the end,
du hast's allein in Händen;
     it is in your hands alone;
und wem du's gibst,
der hat's umsonst:

     and whomever you grant this
     has it for free:
es kann niemand ererben
     no one can inherit it
noch erwerben
durch Werke deine Gnad,
     nor by works
     purchase your grace
die uns errett' vom Sterben.
     which saves us from dying.

5. CORALE
Ich lieg im Streit und widerstreb,
     I lie midst conflict and am reluctant,
hilf, o Herr Christ, dem Schwachen!
     help, O Lord Christ, this weak one!
An deiner Gnad allein ich kleb,
     To your grace alone I cling,
du kannst mich stärker machen.
     you can make me stronger.
Kömmt nun Anfechtung, Herr, so wehr,
     If temptation now comes,
     Lord, then defend
daß sie mich nicht umstoßen.
     that it not overcome me.
Du kannst maßen,
     You can measure
daß mir's nicht bring Gefahr;
     that it not bring me to peril;
ich weiß, du wirst's nicht lassen.
     I know you will not allow this.
