Text for Cantata 135
Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO

Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder

straf nicht in deinem Zorn,
     Oh Lord, do not chastise me
     a poor sinner, in your anger,
dein' ernsten Grimm doch linder,
     rather, soften your earnest wrath
sonst ist's mit mir verlorn.
     lest I be doomed.
Ach Herr, wollst mir vergeben
     Oh Lord, would that you forgive me
mein Sünd und gnädig sein,
     my sins and be merciful
daß ich mag ewig leben,
     that I might live eternally
entfliehn der Höllenpein.
     escaping the pain of Hell.

2. RECITATIVO TENORE
Ach heile mich, du Arzt der Seelen,
     Oh heal me, you physician of the soul,
ich bin sehr krank und schwach;
     I am very ill and weak;
man möchte die Gebeine zählen,
     one can count my bones
so jämmerlich hat mich mein Ungemach,
mein Kreuz und Leiden zugericht;
     so pathetically has my hardship,
     my cross and suffering ravished me;
das Angesicht ist ganz von Tränen aufgeschwollen,
     my face is fully swollen from tears
die, schnellen Fluten gleich, von Wangen abwärts rollen.
     which like rushing torrents roll down my cheeks.
Der Seele ist von Schrecken angst und bange;
     The soul is anguished and trembles with fear;
ach, du Herr, wie so lange?
     alas, you Lord, why so long?

3. ARIA TENORE
Tröste mir, Jesu, mein Gemüte,
     Comfort my soul within me, Jesus,
sonst versink ich in den Tod,
     lest I succumb in death,
hilf mir, hilf mir durch deine Güte
     help me, help me by your goodness,
aus der großen Seelennot!
     out of the soul's great agony!
Denn im Tod ist alles stille,
     For in death all is still,
da gedenkt man deiner nicht.
     there one is not mindful of you.
Liebster Jesu, ist's dein Wille,
     Dearest Jesus, if it is your will,
so erfreu mein Angesicht!
     then cheer my countenance!

4. RECITATIVO ALTO
Ich bin von Seufzen müde,
     I am weary from sighing,
mein Geist hat weder Kraft noch Macht,
     my spirit lacks both power and might,
weil ich die ganze Nacht
     for the whole night through I
oft ohne Seelenruh und Friede
in großem Schweiß und Tränen liege.
     often lie in excessive sweat and tears
     with neither rest for the soul nor peace.
Ich gräme mich fast tot
     I almost fret myself to death
und bin vor Trauern alt,
     and am aged by grieving,
denn meine Angst ist mannigfalt.
     for my anxiety is manifold.

5. ARIA BASSO
Weicht, all ihr Übeltäter,
     Yield, all you evildoers,
mein Jesus tröstet mich!
     my Jesus consoles me!
Er lässt nach Tränen und nach Weinen
     He allows, following tears and weeping,
die Freudensonne wieder scheinen;
     the joyful sun to shine once more;
das Trübsalswetter ändert sich,
     the storm of tribulation is averted,
die Feinde müßen plötzlich fallen
     foes must abruptly fall
und ihre Pfeile rückwärts prallen.
     and their arrows recoil back against them.

6. CORALE
Ehr sei ins Himmels Throne
     Glory be in Heaven's throne
mit hohem Ruhm und Preis
     with high esteem and praise
dem Vater und dem Sohne
     to the Father and to the Son
und auch zu gleicher Weis
     and also equally so
dem Heilgen Geist mit Ehren
     to the Holy Spirit with honor
in alle Ewigkeit,
     in all eternity,
der woll uns all'n bescheren
     who will bestow on us all
die ewge Seligkeit.
     everlasting blessing.
