Nimm von uns, Herr, du treuer Gott

1. CORO
Nimm von uns Herr, du treuer Gott,
Remove from us Lord, you devoted God,
die schwere Straf und große Not,
this severe punishment and great agony,
die wir mit Sünden ohne Zahl
verdienet haben allzumal.
which we have earned by sins
without number, all at once.
Behüt für Krieg und teurer Zeit,
Safeguard from war and risky times,
für Seuchen, Feur und großem Leid.
from pestilence, fire and great hardship.
2. ARIA TENORE
Handle nicht nach deinen Rechten
mit uns bösen Sündenknechten,
Do not deal with us, wicked servants of sin,
as you ought
lass das Schwert der Feinde ruhn!
let the sword of the enemy lay!
Höchster, höre unser Flehen,
Most High, hear our plea,
daß wir nicht durch sündlich Tun
that we, by sinful deeds, not
wie Jerusalem vergehen!

Ach! Herr Gott, durch die Treue dein
Oh! Lord God, through your devotion
wird unser Land in Frieden und Ruhe sein.

Wenn uns ein Unglückswetter droht,
When miserable weather threatens,
so rufen wir,
then we call,
barmherziger Gott, zu dir
merciful God, to you
in solcher Not:
in such distress:
mit Trost und Rettung uns erschein!
appear to us with comfort and redemption!
Du kannst dem feindlichen Zerstören
durch deine Macht und Hilfe wehren.
You can bridle the foe’s devastation
by your power and aid.
Beweis an uns deine große Gnad
Demonstrate to us your tremendous grace
und straf uns nicht auf frischer Tat,
and do not punish us for recent acts
wenn unsre Füsse wanken wollten
when our feet would stubble
und wir aus Schwachheit straucheln sollten.
and we should flounder out of weakness.
Wohn uns mit deiner Güte bei
Attend to us with your goodness
und gib, daß wir

nur nach dem Guten streben,

damit allhier

und auch in jenem Leben

dein Zorn und Grimm fern von uns sei.

Warum willst du so zornig sein?
Why will you be so wrathful?
Es schlagen deines Eifers Flammen
schon über unserm Haupt zusammen.
The flames of your zealousness
are already lapping above our heads.
Ach, stelle doch die Strafen ein
Oh, but put aside the punishment
und trag aus väterlicher Huld
and out of fatherly benevolence allot
mit unserm schwachen Fleisch Geduld!
patience for our weak flesh!

Die Sünd hat uns verderbet sehr.
Sin has greatly corrupted us.
So müssen auch die Frömmsten sagen
So must even the most pious say
und mit betränten Augen klagen:
and with tear-filled eyes lament:
Der Teufel plagt uns noch viel mehr.
The Devil torments us even more and more.
Ja, dieser böse Geist,
Yes, this evil spirit,
der schon von Anbeginn ein Mörder heißt,
who already from the start was known a murderer,
sucht uns um unser Heil zu bringen
seeks to obliterate our salvation in us
und als ein Löwe zu verschlingen.
and to devour [us] like a lion.
Die Welt, auch unser Fleisch und Blut
uns allezeit verführen tut.

Wir treffen hier auf dieser schmalen Bahn
We confront here upon this narrow path
sehr viel Hindernis im Guten an.

Solch Elend kennst du, Herr, allein:
Such wretchedness is known only to you, Lord:
hilf, Helfer, hilf uns Schwachen,

du kannst uns stärker machen!

Ah, let us be decreed to you.

Think on Jesus’ bitter death!
Nimm, Vater, deines Sohnes Schmerzen
Take, Father, you son’s aching
und seiner Wunden Pein zu Herzen,
and the pains of his wounds to heart,
die sind ja für die ganze Welt
they are indeed for the entire world
die Zahlung und das Lösegeld;
the payment and the ransom;
erzeig auch mir zu aller Zeit,
display to me too in all times,
barmherzger Gott, Barmherzigkeit!
merciful God, mercy!
Ich seufze stets in meiner Not:
I continually sigh in my distress:
gedenk an Jesu bittern Tod!
think on Jesus’ bitter death!

Leit uns mit deiner rechten Hand
Lead us with you right hand
und segne unser Stadt und Land;
and bless our city and land;
gib uns allzeit dein heilges Wort,
grant us always your sacred word,
behüt für's Teufels List und Mord;
protect us from the Devil’s cunning and murder;
verleih ein selges Stündelein,
grant the blessed hour be short,
auf daß wir ewig bei dir sein.
until we are eternally beside you.
