Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben

ERSTER TEIL (Part 1)
1. CORO
Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben!
Lord, your eyes look after faith!
Du schlägest sie, aber sie fühlen's nicht;
You nudge them, but they don’t feel it;
du plaget sie, aber sie bessern sich nicht.
you pester them, but they won’t right themselves.
Sie haben ein härter Angesicht denn ein Fels
They have a countenance harder than stone
und wollen sich nicht bekehren.
and will not be converted.
2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Wo ist das Ebenbild, das Gott uns eingepräget,
Where is the likeness that God imprints upon us
wenn der verkehrte Will sich ihm zuwiderleget?
when the consorted will rebuts him?
Wo ist die Kraft von seinem Wort,
Where is the power of his word
wenn alle Besserung weicht aus dem Herzen fort?
when all reform flees from the heart?
Der Höchste suchet uns durch Sanftmut zwar zu zähmen,
The Most High gently seeks in fact to tame us,
ob der verirrte Geist sich wollte noch bequemen;
although the straying spirit would have to be forced;
doch, fährt er fort in dem verstockten Sinn,
yet, he proceeds into the obstinate mind
so gibt er ihn in's Herzens Dünkel hin.
thus plunging himself into the heart’s darkness.
3. ARIA ALTO
Weh der Seele, die den Schaden
nicht mehr kennt
Woe to the soul who no longer
recognizes the damage
und, die Straf auf sich zu laden,
and the punishment which will weigh it down,
störrig rennt, ja von ihres Gottes Gnaden
stubbornly running, yes, away from the grace of its God
selbst sich trennt.

Verachtest du den Reichtum seiner Gnade,
Do you deplore the riches of his grace,
Geduld und Langmütigkeit?
patience and forbearance?
Weißest du nicht, daß dich Gottes Güte
zur Buße locket?
Do you not know that God’s goodness
beckons you toward atonement?
Du aber nach deinem verstockten
But you, in your stubborn
und unbußfertigen Herzen
and unrepentant heart,
häufest dir selbst den Zorn auf den Tag des Zorns
accumulate wrath upon yourself on the day of wrath
und der Offenbarung des gerechten Gerichts Gottes.
and the revelation of God’s righteous judgment.
ZWEITER TEIL (Part 2)
5. ARIA TENORE
Erschrecke doch,
Do be afraid
du allzu sichre Seele!
you all too certain soul!
Denk, was dich würdig zähle
der Sünden Joch.
Consider what gravely reckons
toward the yoke of your sins.
Die Gotteslangmut geht auf einem Fuß von Blei,
God’s tolerance walks with a leaden foot,
damit der Zorn hernach dir desto schwerer sei.
thereby the consequent wrath is even heavier.
6. RECITATIVO ALTO
Beim Warten ist Gefahr;
In waiting there is danger;
willst du die Zeit verlieren?
do you want to miss the moment?
Der Gott, der ehmals gnädig war,
God, who once was gracious
kann leichtlich dich vor seinen Richtstuhl führen.
can easily lead you before his seat of judgement.
Wo bleibt sodann die Buß?
Why then waits repentance?
Es ist ein Augenblick, der Zeit und Ewigkeit, der Leib und Seele scheidet;
In the blink of an eye time and eternity severs the body and soul;
verblendter Sinn, ach kehre doch zurück,
blind mind, oh do turn back,
daß dich dieselbe Stund nicht finde unbereitet!
that this very hour not find you unprepared!
7. CORALE
Heut lebst du, heut bekehre dich,
You live today, convert today,
eh morgen kömmt, kann's ändern sich;
before morning comes, things might change;
wer heut ist frisch, gesund und rot,
someone fresh, healthy and flushed
ist morgen krank, ja wohl gar tot.
tomorrow is ill, yes even quite dead.
So du nun stirbest ohne Buß,
So now you will die without repenting,
dein Leib und Seel dort brennen muß.
your body and soul must then burn.
Hilf, o Herr Jesu, hilf du mir,
Help, O Lord Jesus, help me,
daß ich noch heute komm zu dir
that yet today I approach you
und Buße tu den Augenblick,
and do penance in this moment,
eh mich der schnelle Tod hinrück,
before rapid death pulls me down,
auf daß ich heut und jederzeit
so that I today and at all times
zu meiner Heimfahrt sei bereit.
