Text for Cantata 110
Unser Mund sei voll Lachens
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Unser Mund sei voll Lachen
Our mouths be full of laughter
und unsre Zunge voll Rühmens,
and our tongues full of exultation,
denn der Herr hat Großes an uns getan.
for the Lord has done great things for us.

2. ARIA TENORE
Ihr Gedanken und ihr Sinnen,
     You thoughts and you meditation
schwinget euch anitzt von hinnen,
     soar now forth from here,
steiget schleunig himmelan
     spiral speedily heavenward
und bedenkt, was Gott getan!
and ponder what God has done!
Er wird Mensch, und dies allein,
He becomes human, and this alone,
daß wir Himmels Kinder sein.
     that we be Heaven’s children.

3. RECITATIVO BASSO
Dir, Herr, ist niemand gleich.
To you Lord, no one compares.
Du bist groß und dein Name ist groß
You are great and your name is great
und kannst's mit der Tat beweisen.
and this is evident by your deeds.

4. ARIA ALTO
Ach Herr, was ist ein Menschenkind,
Oh Lord, what is a human child
daß du sein Heil so schmerzlich suchest?
that you so poignantly seek it’s salvation?
Ein Wurm, den du verfluchest,
     A worm, which you curse,
wenn Höll und Satan um ihn sind;
     as Hell and Satan surround him;
doch auch dein Sohn, den Seel und Geist
aus Liebe seinen Erben heißt.
yet even your son, out of love
names the soul and spirit his heirs.

5. ARIA (DUETTO) SOPRANO E TENORE
Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe
Glory be to God on high
und Friede auf Erden
     and peace upon earth
und den Menschen ein Wohlgefallen!
     and good will unto humanity!

6. ARIA BASSO
Wacht auf, ihr Adern und ihr Glieder,
Awake, you veins and you limbs,
und singt dergleichen Freudenlieder,
and sing similar songs of joy,
die unserm Gott gefällig sein.
as are pleasing to our God.
Und ihr, ihr andachtsvollen Saiten,
     And you, you devout strings,
sollt ihm ein solches Lob bereiten,
shall prepare for him such praise
dabei sich Herz und Geist erfreun.
thereby delighting the heart and spirit.

7. CORALE
Alleluja! Gelobt sei Gott,
     Alleluia! Praise be to God,
singen wir all aus unsers Herzens Grunde.
we all sing from the bottom of our hearts.
Denn Gott hat heut gemacht solch Freud,
For God today has made such joy
die wir vergessen solln zu keiner Stunde.
which we shall in no hour forget.
