Text for Cantata 106
Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit (Actus Tragicus)
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. SONATINA

2a. CORO
Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit.
God’s time is the very best time.
In ihm leben, weben und sind wir,
In him we live, we toil and we are,
solange er will.
as long as he so wills.
In ihm sterben wir zur rechten Zeit,
In him we die at the proper time,
wenn er will.
       when he so wills.

2b. ARIOSO TENORE
Ach, Herr, lehre uns bedenken,
O, Lord, teach us to comprehend
daß wir sterben müßen,
       that our dying is certain,
auf daß wir klug werden.
in order that we might gain wisdom.

2c. ARIA BASSO
Bestelle dein Haus;
       Put your house in order,
denn du wirst sterben
       for you will die,
und nicht lebendig bleiben.
       and will not remain alive.

2d. CORO
Es ist der alte Bund:
       It is the ancient covenant:
Mensch, du mußt sterben!
       human,you must die.
Soprano
Ja, komm, Herr Jesu, komm!
       Yea, come Lord Jesus, come!

3a. ARIA ALTO
In deine Hände
       Into your hands
befehl ich meinen Geist;
       I commend my spirit,
du hast mich erlöset,
       you have delivered me,
Herr, du getreuer Gott.
       Lord, you faithful God.

3b. ARIOSO BASSO E CORALE ALTO
Bass
Heute wirst du mit mir im Paradies sein.
Today you will be with me in paradise.

Alto
Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin.
In peace and joy I journey there.
in Gottes Willen,
       by the will of God,
getrost ist mir mein Herz und Sinn,
comforted are my heart and mind,
sanft und stille.
       tender and still.
Wie Gott mir verheißen hat:
       As God has promised me:
der Tod ist mein Schlaf geworden.
       death has become my slumber.

4. CORO
Glorie, Lob, Ehr und Herrlichkeit
       Glory, laud, honor and splendor
sei dir, Gott Vater und Sohn bereit,
be to you, God the Father
       and the Son, prepared,
dem heilgen Geist mit Namen!
to the Holy Spirit by name!
Die göttlich Kraft
       Divine power
mach uns sieghaft
       make us triumphant
durch Jesum Christum, Amen.
       through Jesus Christ, Amen.
