Was mein Gott will, das g'scheh allzeit

1. CORO
Was mein Gott will,
     Whatever my God desires,
das g'scheh allzeit,
     may it always occur,
sein Will, der ist der beste;
     his will, it is the best;
zu helfen den'n er ist bereit,
     he is prepared to help
 die an ihn gläuben feste.
     those who firmly believe in him.
Er hilft aus Not, der fromme Gott,
     He helps (them) out of distress, the faithful God,
und züchtiget mit Maßen:
     and chastens with restraint:
wer Gott vertraut, fest auf ihn baut,
     whomever trusts in God, building firmly upon him,
den will er nicht verlassen.
      he will not abandon.
 
2. ARIA BASSO
Entsetze dich, mein Herze, nicht,
     Be not dismayed, you my heart,
Gott ist dein Trost und Zuversicht
     God is your comfort and assurance
und deiner Seele Leben.
     and life for your soul.
Ja, was sein weiser Rat bedacht,
     Indeed, that which his wise counsel intends
dem kann die Welt und Menschenmacht
unmöglich widerstreben.
     is impossible for the world and human might to counter.
 
3. RECITATIVO ALTO
O Törichter! der sich von Gott entzieht
     O foolish one! who evades God
und wie ein Jonas dort
     just as Jonah once
vor Gottes Angesichte flieht;
     fled before God’s countenance;
auch unser Denken ist ihm offenbar,
     even our thoughts are apparent to him,
und unsers Hauptes Haar hat er gezählet.
     and he has numbered the hairs of our heads.
Wohl dem, der diesen Schutz erwählet
     Blessed is the one, who chooses this protection    
im gläubigen Vertrauen,
     in faithful trust
auf dessen Schluss und Wort
mit Hoffnung und Geduld zu schauen.
     watching with hope and patience
     for its closure and word.
 
4. ARIA (DUETTO) ALTO E TENORE
So geh ich mit beherzten Schritten,
     So, I proceed with valiant strides,
auch wenn mich Gott zum Grabe führt.
     even if God leads me toward the grave.
Gott hat die Tage aufgeschrieben,
     God has written down the day,
so wird, wenn seine Hand mich rührt,
     in which, when his hand stirs me,
des Todes Bitterkeit vertrieben.
      the bitterness of death will be dispelled.
 
5. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Drum wenn der Tod zuletzt den Geist
noch mit Gewalt aus seinem Körper reißt,
     Thus, in the end, when death brutally wrenches
     the spirit from its body,
so nimm ihn, Gott, in treue Vaterhände!
     so take it, God, into your loyal fatherly hands!
Wenn Teufel, Tod und Sünde mich bekriegt
     When devil, death and sin combat me
und meine Sterbekissen
     and my coffin
ein Kampfplatz werden müssen,
     becomes a sure battle ground,
so hilf, damit in dir mein Glaube siegt!
     help, so that my faith is victorious in you!
O seliges, gewünschtes Ende!
      O blessed, desired ending!
 
6. CORALE
Noch eins, Herr, will ich bitten dich,
     One more thing, Lord, I want to ask of you
du wirst mir's nicht versagen:
     that you will not fail me:
wenn mich der böse Geist anficht,
     even if the evil spirit confronts me,
laß mich doch nicht verzagen.
     let me still not fail.
Hilf, steur und wehr, ach Gott, mein Herr,
     Help, steer and defend, oh God, my Lord,
zu Ehren deinem Namen.
     to the honor of your name.
Wer das begehrt, dem wird's gewährt;
     To whomever desires it, it will be granted;
drauf sprech ich fröhlich: Amen.
      to this I glady say: Amen.
