Text for Cantata 116
Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ,
You prince of peace, Lord Jesus Christ,
wahr' Mensch und wahrer Gott,
     true human and true God,
ein starker Nothelfer du bist
you are a mighty helper in need
im Leben und im Tod:
     in life and in death:
drum wir allein im Namen dein
thus we in your name alone
zu deinem Vater schreien.
     cry unto your father.

2. ARIA ALTO
Ach, unaussprechlich ist die Not
     Oh, inexpressable is this agony
und des erzürnten Richters Dräuen!
and the threat of the furious judge!
Kaum, daß wir noch in dieser Angst,
Scarcely, since we are still in such anguish,
wie du, o Jesu, selbst verlangst,
though you, O Jesus, yourself stipulate,
zu Gott in deinem Namen schreien.
can we cry unto God in your name.

 3. RECITATIVO TENORE
Gedenke doch, o Jesu,
     But remember, O Jesus,
daß du noch ein Fürst des Friedens heißest!
that you are yet named a prince of peace!
Aus Liebe wolltest du dein Wort uns senden.
Out of love you wanted to send us your word.
Will sich dein Herz auf einmal von uns wenden,
Will your heart suddenly turn from us,
der du so große Hülfe sonst beweisest?
     while you otherwise demonstrate
     such great help?

4. ARIA (TERZETTO) SOPRANO, TENORE  E BASSO
Ach, wir bekennen unsre Schuld
     Alas, we recognize our guilt
und bitten nichts als um Geduld
and plead for nothing but lienience
und um dein unermesslich Lieben.
     and for your immeasurable love.
Es brach ja dein erbarmend Herz,
Your heart of mercy burst, yes, was broken
als der Gefallnen Schmerz
as the pain of those fallen
dich zu uns in die Welt getrieben.
drove you to the world for us.

5. RECITATIVO ALTO
Ach, laß uns durch die scharfen Ruten
nicht allzu heftig bluten!
Oh, let us not bleed all too severely
     under sharp rods!
O Gott, der du ein Gott der Ordnung bist,
O God, since you are a God of order
du weißt, was bei der Feinde Grimm
vor Grausamkeit und Unrecht ist.

you know how ferocious the enemy is
     in gruesomeness and injustice.
Wohlan, so strecke deine Hand
So then, thus stretch out your hand
auf ein erschreckt geplagtes Land,
over a frightened and plagued land,
die kann der Feinde Macht bezwingen
which can conquer the enemy's might
und uns beständig Friede bringen!
     and bring us continual peace!

6. CORALE
Erleucht auch unser Sinn und Herz
Enlighten too our mind and heart
durch den Geist deiner Gnad,
through the spirit of your grace,
daß wir nicht treiben draus ein Scherz,
     that we not take likely
der unsrer Seelen schad.
     that which injures our soul.
O Jesu Christ, allein du bist,
O Jesus Christ, you alone are
der solchs wohl kann ausrichten.
the one indeed who can rectify such things.
