Christum wir sollen loben schon

1. CORO
Christum wir sollen loben schon,
     We shall yet praise the Christ,
der reinen Magd Marien Sohn,
     son of the pure maid Mary,
so weit die liebe Sonne leucht
     as far as the cherished sun radiates
und an aller Welt Ende reicht.
     reaching all ends of the earth.
 
2. ARIA TENORE
O du von Gott erhöhte Kreatur,
     O you creature elevated by God,
begreife nicht, nein, nein, bewundre nur:
     do not even try to grasp, no, no, merely wonder:
Gott will durch Fleisch des Fleisches Heil erwerben.
     how God will, through the flesh, procure the salvation of the flesh.
Wie groß ist doch der Schöpfer aller Dinge,
     How great indeed is the creator of all things,
und wie bist du verachtet und geringe,
     and how you, though despised and meager,
um dich dadurch zu retten vom Verderben.
      are, by this, to be saved from damnation.

3. RECITATIVO ALTO
Der Gnade unermesslich's Wesen
     This being of unfathomable grace
hat sich den Himmel nicht zur Wohnstatt auserlesen,
     was not selected by heaven for its own dwelling,
weil keine Grenze sie umschließt.
     for no borders could hold it in.
Was Wunder, daß  allhie Verstand und Witz gebricht,
     What a miracle, that all at once, comprehension and wit collapse,
ein solch Geheimnis zu ergründen,
     trying to fathom such a mystery,
wenn sie sich in ein keusches Herze gießt.
     as it infuses the chaste heart.
Gott wählet sich den reinen Leib zu einem Tempel seiner Ehren,
     God elects for himself the pure body as a temple for his glory,
um zu den Menschen sich mit wundervoller Art zu kehren.
      in order to turn to humanity in this wonderful manner.

Johannis freudenvolles Springen
     John‘s joy-filled leaps (in the womb)
erkannte dich, mein Jesu, schon.
     already recognized you, my Jesus.
Nun da ein Glaubensarm dich hält,
     Now while you are held in the faithful ones arms,
so will mein Herze von der Welt
zu deiner Krippe brünstig dringen.
     so will my heart passionately hasten from this world unto your manger.

5. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Doch wie erblickt es dich in deiner Krippe?
     Yet how are you to be beheld in your manger?
Es seufzt mein Herz: mit bebender und fast geschlossner Lippe
     My heart murmurs: with trembling and nearly silent lips
bringt es sein dankend Opfer dar.
     lulling its offering of thanks.
Gott, der so unermesslich war,
     God, who was so incomprehensible,
nimmt Knechtsgestalt und Armut an.
     has assumed a servant’s rank and lowliness.
Und weil er dieses uns zugutgetan,
     And since he did this for us,
so lasset mit der Engel Chören ein jauchzend Lob- und Danklied hören!
     thus may a jubilant song of praise and thanks be heard among the angelic choirs!

Lob, Ehr und Dank sei dir gesagt,
     Praise, honor and thanks be proclaimed unto you,
Christ, geborn von der reinen Magd,
     Christ, born of the pure maid,
samt Vater und dem Heilgen Geist
     together with the Father and the Holy Spirit
von nun an bis in Ewigkeit.
      from now on, into eternity.
