Text for Cantata 126
Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort,
Uphold us Lord, by your word,
und steur' des Papsts und Türken Mord,
and steer away the murders by Papists and Turks,
die Jesum Christum, deinen Sohn,
stürzen wollen von seinem Thron.
who want to topple Jesus Christ,
     your son, from his throne.

2. ARIA TENORE
Sende deine Macht von oben,
     Send your power from above,
Herr der Herren, starker Gott!
     Lord of lords, mighty God!
deine Kirche zu erfreuen
     to delight your church
und der Feinde bittern Spott
augenblicklich zu zerstreuen.
and to disperse the foe’s bitter mockery
     in an instant.

3. CORALE E RECITATIVO ALTO E TENORE
Alto

Der Menschen Gunst und Macht wird wenig nützen,
Human patronage and power will be of little use,
wenn du nicht willt das arme Häuflein schützen,
were you not to protect this poor little band,
Both
Gott Heilger Geist, du Tröster wert,
God, Holy Spirit, you precious comforter,
Tenor
du weißt, daß die verfolgte Gottesstadt
you know that the persecuted city of God
den ärgsten Feind nur in sich selber hat
has the most wicked of foes within itself
durch die Gefährlichkeit der falschen Brüder.
through the danger of false brethren.
Both
Gib dein'm Volk einerlei Sinn auf Erd,
Make your people of one mind upon earth,
Alto
daß wir, an Christi Leibe Glieder,
that we as members of Christ's body,
im Glauben eins, im Leben einig sei'n.
one in faith, be united in life.
Both
Steh bei uns in der letzten Not!
Stand beside us in the final strife!
Tenor
Es bricht alsdann der letzte Feind herein
The ultimate foe then closes in
und will dein Trost von unsern Herzen trennen;
     and wants to sever your comfort from our hearts;
doch laß dich da als unsern Helfer kennen.
but make yourself apparent there as our helper.
Both
G'leit uns ins Leben aus dem Tod!
Escort us unto the life out of death!

4. ARIA BASSO
Stürze zu Boden schwülstige Stolze!
Dash to the ground the pompous proud!
Mache zunichte, was sie erdacht!
Reduce to nothing whatever they devise!
Laß sie den Abgrund plötzlich verschlingen,
Let the abyss instantly swallow them up,
wehre dem Toben feindlicher Macht,
defend against the rage of hostile might,
laß ihr Verlangen nimmer gelingen!
let their demands no longer succeed!

5. RECITATIVO TENORE
So wird dein Wort und Wahrheit offenbar
Thus your word and truth will be evident
und stellet sich im höchsten Glanze dar,
and be presented in utmost radiance,
daß du vor deine Kirche wachst,
as you watch over your church,
daß du des heilgen Wortes Lehren
zum Segen fruchtbar machst;

as you make the lessons of the Holy Scriptures
     fruitful for blessing,
und willst du dich als Helfer zu uns kehren,
and should you turn to us as helper,
so wird uns denn in Frieden des Segens Überfluß beschieden.
then will be granted to us
an abundance of blessing in peace.

6. CORALE
Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich,
     Lend us peace mercifully,
Herr Gott, zu unsern Zeiten;
     Lord God, within our time;
es ist doch ja kein andrer nicht,
there is indeed no one else
der für uns könnte streiten,
     who could battle for us
denn du, unser Gott, alleine.
     but you our God alone.

Gib unsern Fürst'n und aller Obrigkeit
Grant our princes and all authorities
Fried und gut Regiment,
     peace and good rule,
daß wir unter ihnen
     that we beneath them
ein geruh'g und stilles Leben führen mögen
may lead a peaceful and quiet life
in aller Gottseligkeit und Ehrbarkeit.
in all God's blessedness and respectability.
Amen.
