Text for Cantata 131
Aus der Tiefen rufe ich, Herr, zu dir
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO

Aus der Tiefen ruf’ ich, Herr, zu dir.
Out of the depths I cry, Lord, to you.
Herr, höre meine Stimme,
     Lord, hear my voice,
laß deine Ohren merken
     let your ears take note
auf die Stimme meines Flehens!
of the voice of my supplication!

2. ARIOSO BASSO E CORALE SOPRANO
Bass

So du willst, Herr, Sünde zurechnen,
If you would, Lord, tally up sin,
Herr, wer wird bestehen?
     Lord, who would endure?
Soprano
Erbarm’ dich mein in solcher Last,
Have mercy on me under such burden,
nimm sie aus meinem Herzen,
     remove it from my heart,
dieweil du sie gebüßet hast
since you have atoned for it
am Holz mit Todesschmerzen,
on the wood [of the cross], by pain of death,
Bass
denn bei dir ist die Vergebung,
     for in you is forgiveness
daß man dich fürchte.
     that one might fear you.
Soprano
auf daß ich nicht mit großem Weh
in meinen Sünden untergeh,
so that I might not, with immense woe,
     perish for my sins
noch ewiglich verzage.
     nor eternally despair.

3. CORO
Ich harre des Herrn, meine Seele harret,
I wait upon the Lord, my soul waits,
und ich hoffe auf sein Wort.
and I hope in his word.

4. ARIA TENORE E CORALE ALTO
Tenor

Meine Seele wartet auf den Herrn
My soul waits upon the Lord
von einer Morgenwache bis zu der andern.
from one morning watch to the next.
Alto
Und weil ich denn in meinem Sinn,
And since I then in my thoughts,
wie ich zuvor geklaget,
     as I have previously lamented,
auch ein betrübter Sünder bin,
     am also a miserable sinner
den sein Gewissen naget,
     who is gnawed by conscience,
und wollte gern im Blute dein
and would gladly by your blood
von Sünden abgewaschen sein
     be washed free of sin
wie David and Manasseh.
     as were David and Manasseh.*

5. CORO
Israel, hoffe auf den Herrn;
     Israel, hope in the Lord;
denn bei dem Herrn ist die Gnade
for in the Lord there is grace
und viel Erlösung bei ihm.
     and great redemption through him.
Und er wird Israel erlösen
     And he will redeem Israel
aus allen seinen Sünden.
     from all its sins.

*eldest son of Joseph.
