Text for Cantata 139
Wohl dem, der sich auf seinen Gott
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Wohl dem, der sich auf seinen Gott
recht kindlich kann verlassen!

     Blessed is he who can surrender himself
     to his God, truly like a child!
Den mag gleich Sünde, Welt und Tod
     Though together sin, the world, death
und alle Teufel hassen,
     and every devil may hate him,
so bleibt er dennoch wohlvergnügt,
     he nevertheless remains well contented
wenn er nur Gott zum Freunde kriegt.
     when he simply receives God as friend.

2. ARIA TENORE
Gott ist mein Freund; was hilft das Toben,
     God is my friend; what use is the rage
so wider mich ein Feind erhoben!
     that an enemy wages against me!
Ich bin getrost bei Neid und Hass.
      I am confident amid spite and hate.
Ja, redet nur die Wahrheit spärlich,
     Yes, just speak truth sparingly,
seid immer falsch, was tut mir das?
     be ever false, how does this affect me?
Ihr Spötter seid mir ungefährlich.
     You scorners are of no danger to me.

3. RECITATIVO ALTO
Der Heiland sendet ja die Seinen
     The Savior, yes, sends his own
recht mitten in der Wölfe Wut.
     right into the midst of the wolves' fury.
Um ihn hat sich der Bösen Rotte
     Surrounding them is this heinous pack
zum Schaden und zum Spotte
mit List gestellt;
     shrewdly positioned
     for ravaging and derision;
doch da sein Mund so weisen Ausspruch tut,
     yet as his mouth issues such wise decrees,
so schützt er mich auch vor der Welt.
     so he protects me from the world as well.

 4. ARIA BASSO
Das Unglück schlägt auf allen Seiten
     Disaster strikes from every side
um mich ein zentnerschweres Band.
      encircling me in a hundredweight band.
Doch plötzlich erscheinet die helfende Hand.
     But suddenly emerges the helping hand.
Mir scheint des Trostes Licht von weiten;
     The consoling light appears to me from afar;
da lern ich erst, daß Gott allein
     there I instantly perceive that God alone
der Menschen bester Freund muß sein.
     must be humanity's best friend.

5. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Ja, trag ich gleich den größten Feind in mir,
     Yes, though I still bear the greatest foe within me,
die schwere Last der Sünden,
     this heavy burden of sin,
mein Heiland läßt mich Ruhe finden.
     my Savior lets me find rest.
Ich gebe Gott, was Gottes ist,
     I give to God, that which is God's,
das Innerste der Seelen.
     the innermost of my soul.
Will er sie nun erwählen,
     If he will now accept it,
so weicht der Sünden Schuld,
     so wanes the guilt of sin,
so fällt des Satans List.
     so fails the craft of Satan.

6. CORALE
Dahero Trotz der Höllen Heer!
     Hence defy the hosts of Hell!
Trotz auch des Todes Rachen!
     Defy the jaws of death as well!
Trotz aller Welt! mich kann nicht mehr
     Defy the entire world! no longer can
ihr Pochen traurig machen!
     its pounding create despair!
Gott ist mein Schutz, mein Hilf und Rat;
     God is my protector, my help and counsel;
wohl dem, der Gott zum Freunde hat!
     blessed is he who has God as friend!
