Text for Cantata 155
Mein Gott, wie lang, ach lange?
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1.  RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Mein Gott, wie lang’, ach lange?
     My God how long, oh so long?
Des Jammers ist zu viel,
     This misery is too much,
ich sehe gar kein Ziel
     I see no end in sight
der Schmerzen und der Sorgen!
     to the pain and suffering!
Dein süßer Gnadenblick
     Your sweet glance of grace
hat unter Nacht und Wolken sich verborgen,
     is hidden behind night and clouds,
die Liebeshand zieht sich, ach, ganz zurück!
     your loving hand, utterly withdrawn from me!
Um Trost ist mir sehr bange!
     I greatly yearn for comfort!
Ich finde, was mich Armen täglich kränket,
     I find what daily grieves me, the poor,
der Tränen Maß wird stets voll eingeschenket,
     my measure of tears continually poured full,
der Freuden Wein gebricht;
     the wine of joy lacking;
mir sinkt fast alle Zuversicht!
     my confidence almost completely sunk!

2.  ARIA ALTO E TENORE
Du mußt glauben,
     You must believe,
du mußt hoffen,
     you must hope
du mußt Gott gelassen sein.
     you must be serene in God.
Jesus weiß die rechten Stunden,
     Jesus knows the proper hour,
dich mit Hülfe zu erfreun.
     to cheer you with his aid.
Wenn die trübe Zeit verschwunden,
     As the gloomy time disappears
steht sein ganzes Herz dir offen.
     his whole heart awaits, opened for you.

3.  RECITATIVO BASSO
So sei, o Seele, sei zufrieden!
     So be, O soul, be at peace!
Wann es vor deinen Augen scheint,
     When it appears before your eyes,
als ob dein liebster Freund sich ganz
 von dir geschieden,
     as if your dearest friend
     has completely abandoned you,
wann er dich kurze Zeit verläßt.
     that he suddenly deserted you.
Herz! Glaube fest, es wird ein Kleines sein,
     Heart! believe firmly, it is but a trifle,
da er für bittre Zähren dir Trost
und  Freudenwein und Honigseim für Wermut
 will gewähren.

     for he wishes to impart unto you comfort for your bitter tears,
     and joyous wine and virgin honey for your gall,
Ach, denke nicht, daß er von Herzen dich betrübe;
     Oh, do not think that he willingly causes you distress;
er prüfet nur durch Leiden deine Liebe,
     he merely tests your love through suffering,
er machet daß dein Herz bei trüben Stunden weine,
     he allows your heart to weep during bleak hours,
damit sein Gnadenlicht dir desto lieblicher  erscheine:
     so that the light of his grace appears
     that much dearer to you:
er hat, was dich ergötzt zuletzt zu
deinem Trost dir vorbehalten;

     he has in reserve that which will delight you
     as your supreme comfort.
drum laß ihn nur, o Herz,
     therefore, just let him, O heart,
in allem walten!
     in everything prevail!

4.  ARIA SOPRANO
Wirf, mein Herze, wirf dich noch
     Cast, my heart, cast yet yourself
in des Höchsten Liebesarme,
     into the Most-High’s arms of love,
daß er deiner sich erbarme!
     that he may have mercy on you!
Lege deiner Sorgen Joch
     Lay the yoke of your sorrows
und was dich bisher beladen,
     and that which, until now, has burdened you
auf die Achseln seiner Gnaden!
     upon the shoulders of his grace!

5.  CORALE
Ob sich's anließ, als wollt' er nicht,
     Though it seems he doesn’t care,
laß dich es nicht erschrecken,
     let yourself not be dismayed,
denn wo er ist am besten mit,
     for where he is the most present,
da will er’s nicht entdecken;
     there he wishes to not be detected;
sein Wort laß dir gewißer sein,
     his word allows you certainty
und ob dein Herz spräch lauter Nein,
     and though your heart says clearly “nay”,
so laß doch dir nicht grauen.
     still let yourself not dread.
