Text for Cantata 158
Der Friede sei mit dir
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. RECITATIVO BASSO
Der Friede sei mit dir,
     Peace be with you,
du ängstliches Gewissen!
     you anxious conscience!
Dein Mittler stehet hier,
     Your intermediary stands here
who has reconciled and torn-up your
book of debt and the law's condemnation.
Der Friede sei mit dir,
     Peace be with you,
der Fürste dieser Welt,
the prince of this world (Satan)
der deiner Seele nachgestellt,
     who stalks your soul
is quelled and felled by the blood of the lamb.
Mein Herz, was bist du so betrübt,
My heart, why are you so distressed,
da dich doch Gott durch Christum liebt!
for God indeed loves you through Christ!
Er selber spricht zu mir:
     He himself says to me:
der Friede sei mit dir!
     peace be with you!

2. ARIA BASSO E CORALE SOPRANO
Welt, ade, ich bin dein müde,
World, adieu, I tire of you,
Salems Hütten stehn mir an,
     Salem's shelters await me,
wo ich Gott in Ruh und Friede
ewig selig schauen kann.
where I, in quiet and peace,
     eternally blessed, can behold God.

Welt, ade, ich bin dein müde,
World, adieu, I tire of you,
ich will nach dem Himmel zu,
I want to go to Heaven,
da wird sein der rechte Friede
where there will be true peace
und die ewig Seelenruh.
and eternal rest for the soul.

There I will remain, there I am content to dwell,
da prang ich gezieret mit himmlischen Kronen.
there will I shine adorned with a heavenly crown.

Welt, bei dir ist Krieg und Streit,
World, with you are war and strife,
nichts denn lauter Eitelkeit;
     nothing but rampant conceit;
in dem Himmel allezeit
but in Heaven at all times,
Friede, Freud und Seligkeit.
     peace, joy and bliss.

3. RECITATIVO ED ARIOSO BASSO
Nun, Herr, regiere meinen Sinn,
     Now, Lord, govern my mind,
damit ich auf der Welt
so that I, upon this world
as long as you still desire to leave me here,
ein Kind des Friedens bin,
     am a child of peace,

and let me depart from my suffering
unto you, as Simeon did, in peace!

There I will remain, there I am content to dwell,
da prang ich gezieret mit himmlischen Kronen.
there will I shine adorned with a heavenly crown.

4. CORALE
Hier ist das rechte Osterlamm,
Here is the true Pascal Lamb
davon Gott hat geboten,
     of which God has offered,
das ist hoch an des Kreuzes Stamm
high on the stem of the cross it was
in heißer Lieb' gebraten,
     roasted in ardent love,
des Blut zeichnet unser Tür,
     its blood marks our door,
daß hält der Glaub' dem Tode für,
that faith might hold death at bay,
der Würger kann uns nicht rühren.
the slayer can no longer touch us.
Alleluja!
     Alleluia!
