Text for Cantata 175
Er rufet seinen Schafen mit Namen
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. RECITATIVO TENORE
Er rufet seinen Schafen mit Namen
He calls his sheep by name
und führet sie hinaus.
     and leads them forth.

2. ARIA ALTO
Komm, leite mich,
     Come, lead me,
es sehnet sich
mein Geist auf grüner Weide!
     my spirit yearns
     for green pasture!
Mein Herze schmacht,
     My heart craves,
ächzt Tag und Nacht,
     bleating day and night
mein Hirte, meine Freude.
     for my shepherd, my joy.

3. RECITATIVO TENORE
Wo find ich dich?
     Where can I find you?
Ach, wo bist du verborgen?
     Oh, where are you hidden?
O! Zeige dich mir bald!
O! reveal yourself to me quickly!
Ich sehne mich.
     I am yearning.
Brich an, erwünschter Morgen!
     Dawn, desirable morning!

4. ARIA TENORE
Es dünket mich, ich seh dich kommen,
It seems to me, I see you coming,
du gehst zur rechten Türe ein.
you enter through the proper gate.
Du wirst im Glauben aufgenommen
     You are admitted in faith
und mußt der wahre Hirte sein.
and must be the true shepherd.
Ich kenne deine holde Stimme,
     I recognize your fair voice
die voller Lieb und Sanftmut ist,
which is full of love and gentleness,
daß ich im Geist darob ergrimme,
so that I am thus perplexed
wer zweifelt, daß du Heiland seist.
how anyone could doubt you are the Savior.

5. RECITATIVO ALTO E BASSO
Alto
Sie vernahmen aber nicht, was es war,
They however did not grasp what it was
das er zu ihnen gesaget hatte.
that he had said to them.
Bass
Ach ja! Wir Menschen sind oftmals den Tauben zu vergleichen:
Oh, yes! We humans are often comparable to the deaf:
wenn die verblendete Vernunft nicht weiß, was er gesaget hatte.
when blind reason does cannot understand what he has said.
O! Törin, merke doch, wenn Jesus mit dir spricht,
O! Foolish one, mark well when Jesus speaks with you,
daß es zu deinem Heil geschicht.
     for it affects your salvation.

6. ARIA BASSO
Öffnet euch, ihr beiden Ohren,
Open up, both of you ears,
Jesus hat euch zugeschworen,
     Jesus has vowed to you
daß er Teufel, Tod erlegt.
that he will slay devil and death.
Gnade, Gnüge, volles Leben
     Grace, contentment, full life,
will er allen Christen geben,
these he will grant all Christians
wer ihm folgt, sein Kreuz nachträgt.
who follow him, bearing his cross.

7. CORALE
Nun, werter Geist, ich folg dir;
     Now, precious spirit, I follow you;
hilf, daß ich suche für und für
help me to seek, forever and ever
nach deinem Wort ein ander Leben,
by your word, a different life
das du mir willt aus Gnaden geben.
which you will grant me out of grace.
Dein Wort ist ja der Morgenstern,
Your word is indeed the morning star,
der herrlich leuchtet nah und fern.
which gloriously shines, near and far.
Drum will ich, die mich anders lehren,
in Ewigkeit, mein Gott, nicht hören.
Thus I will not listen to those
     who instruct me otherwise,
     eternally, my God.
Alleluja, alleluja!
     Alleluia, alleluia!
