Text for Cantata 182
Himmelskönig, sei willkommen
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1.  SONATA

2. CHORUS

Himmelskönig, sei willkommen,

     King of Heaven be welcomed,
lass auch uns dein Zion sein!
let us also be your Zion!
Komm herein!
     Come within!
Du hast uns das Herz genommen.
You have laid hold of our hearts.

3.  RECITATIVO BASSO
Siehe, siehe ich komme.
     Behold, behold I come.
Im Buch ist von mir geshrieben:
In the book it is written of me:
deinen Willen, mein Gott, tu’ ich gerne.
your will, my God, I gladly do.

4.  ARIA BASSO
Starkes Lieben, das dich, groβer Gottessohn,
von dem Thron deiner Herrlichkeit getrieben,

It was an intense love, great son of God,
which compelled you from your throne of splendor,
daß du dich zum Heil der Welt
als ein Opfer fürgestellt,
that you positioned yourself as a sacrifice
for the salvation of the world.
daß du dich mit Blut verschrieben
that you consigned yourself with blood.

5.  ARIA ALTO
Leget euch dem Heiland unter,
     Bow down before the Savior,
Herzen, die ihr christlich seid.
you hearts, that you be Christ-like.
Tragt ein unbeflecktes Kleid
eures Glaubens ihm entgegen,
Lay down an unsoiled robe of your faith
     before his approach,
Leib und Leben und Vermögen
     Body and life and fortunes
sei dem König itzt geweiht
be now consecrated to the king.

6.  ARIA TENORE
Jesu, lass durch Wohl und Weh
mich auch mit dir ziehen.

Jesus, let me also go along with you,
     through well and woe.
Schreit die Welt nur „Kreuzige!"
Though the world screams only, "Crucify!"
so lass mich nicht fliehen,
     still let me not flee,
Herr, vor deinem Kreuzpanier;
     Lord, before the banner of your cross;
Krone und Palmen find' ich hier.
crown and palms do I find here.

7.  CORALE
Jesu, deine Passion
     Jesus, your Passion
ist mir lauter Freude,
     is pure joy to me,
deine Wunden, Kron' und Hohn
     your wounds, crown and scorn
meines Herzens Weide;
     are pasture to my heart;
meine Seele auf Rosen geht
     my soul treads upon roses
wenn ich dran gedenke:
     when I ponder this:
in dem Himmel eine Stätt
     a place in Heaven
uns deswegen schenke.
     thus imparted to us.

8.  CORO
So lasset uns gehen in Salem der Freuden!
So let us go forth into this Salem of joy!
Begleitet den König in Lieben und Leiden!
Accompany the king in love and suffering!
Er gehet voran und öffnet die Bahn.
He goes ahead and opens the way.
